Sent crypto and wondering where it is? Your transaction ID (TXID) is the receipt that lets you track exactly where your funds are on the blockchain. This guide explains what a TXID is, how to find it, and how to use it.

What Is a Transaction ID?

A transaction ID (TXID or transaction hash) is a unique string of letters and numbers that identifies a specific transaction on the blockchain. Every crypto transaction—send, receive, swap, stake—gets a unique TXID. Think of it as a tracking number, like a FedEx package number but for crypto.

Example Bitcoin TXID: a1b2c3d4e5f6789... (64 characters)

How to Find Your Transaction ID

On Exchanges

Go to your transaction history or withdrawal history. Each completed transaction shows a TXID or “Transaction Hash” link. On Coinbase, Binance, and Kraken, click the transaction to see details including the TXID. See exchange guide.

In Wallets

MetaMask, Phantom, and other wallets show the TXID in your activity/transaction history. Tap any transaction to see its hash and a link to the block explorer. See wallet guide.

How to Track a Transaction

  1. Copy the TXID from your exchange or wallet
  2. Open the appropriate block explorer:
    • Bitcoin: mempool.space or blockchain.com
    • Ethereum: etherscan.io
    • Solana: solscan.io
    • Arbitrum/Base: arbiscan.io / basescan.org
  3. Paste the TXID in the search bar
  4. View the transaction status: pending, confirmed, or failed

Transaction Status Meanings

  • Pending: Transaction is submitted but not yet confirmed by the network. Wait for confirmations
  • Confirmed: Transaction is included in a block. The more confirmations, the more final it is (1 confirmation = included in latest block; 6+ Bitcoin confirmations = highly secure)
  • Failed: Transaction didn’t execute (insufficient gas, contract error). Your crypto stays in your wallet but you may lose the gas fee. See gas guide

When You Need a Transaction ID

  • Missing deposits: If crypto doesn’t arrive at an exchange, provide the TXID to support to trace it. See sending guide
  • Dispute resolution: Prove you sent a payment to the correct address
  • Tax records: TXIDs are proof of transactions for tax reporting. See tax guide
  • Verifying payments: Confirm a payment was actually sent and confirmed on-chain

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a TXID the same as a wallet address?

No. A wallet address identifies WHERE to send crypto. A TXID identifies a specific transaction that already happened. Think: address = street address, TXID = package tracking number.

Can I reverse a transaction using the TXID?

No. Blockchain transactions are irreversible. The TXID only lets you view the transaction details. See security guide.

Why is my transaction still pending?

Usually because the gas fee was too low (transaction is waiting in the queue) or the network is congested. Bitcoin transactions can take 10-60+ minutes during high demand. See gas fees explained.
