How to Buy Arbitrum (ARB): Exchanges and Layer 2 Routes

ARB is the governance token of Arbitrum, the largest Ethereum layer 2 network by many measures, and the smartest way to approach how to buy Arbitrum is to think about where the token should land. ARB’s native home is Arbitrum One, so buying on an exchange and withdrawing directly on the Arbitrum One network avoids Ethereum mainnet fees entirely. Once there, you will still need a small amount of ETH, because Arbitrum charges gas in ETH, not ARB. Coinbase, Kraken, Robinhood, Binance and OKX all list ARB as of October 2026.

In brief

  • Pick “Arbitrum One” as the withdrawal network when it is offered; avoid Arbitrum Nova unless you specifically need it.
  • Gas on Arbitrum is paid in ETH. An ARB-only wallet cannot move its tokens.
  • You can also buy ARB on-chain via Uniswap or Camelot on Arbitrum after withdrawing ETH there.
  • The ARB contract on Arbitrum One is 0x912ce59144191c1204e64559fe8253a0e49e6548; on Ethereum it is a different address.
  • Monthly unlocks for team and investors continue until about March 2027.

How to buy Arbitrum the fast way: withdraw ARB on Arbitrum One

Arbitrum is an optimistic rollup that executes transactions off Ethereum and posts the data back to it; our Arbitrum explainer covers how that works. ARB itself was issued on Arbitrum One in March 2023, with a bridged ERC-20 version on Ethereum mainnet. That means there are two contract addresses for the same token:

Network ARB contract address When to use it
Arbitrum One (native) 0x912ce59144191c1204e64559fe8253a0e49e6548 DAO voting via delegation, Arbitrum DeFi, cheapest transfers
Ethereum mainnet (bridged) 0xb50721bcf8d664c30412cfbc6cf7a15145234ad1 Ethereum-only apps; higher gas costs

Both addresses match CoinGecko’s ARB page as of October 2026; confirm on Arbiscan or Etherscan before adding a custom token to a wallet. Because your EVM address is the same on both networks, MetaMask will show your ARB only when you are viewing the network it actually sits on.

When you withdraw from an exchange, the network dropdown is the key decision. Robinhood, for instance, states that ARB withdrawals go only to addresses on the native Arbitrum chain. Other exchanges show both “Arbitrum One” and “Ethereum (ERC-20).” Choose Arbitrum One unless you have a reason not to: the withdrawal fee is usually lower and the tokens arrive where they are useful.

Deposits in the other direction take longer than many people expect. Robinhood, for example, waits for 30 confirmations (about five minutes) before crediting ARB sent to it on Arbitrum. Other exchanges set their own thresholds, so a transfer that shows as complete on Arbiscan may still read “pending” in your exchange account for a few minutes.

Arbitrum One vs Nova

Arbitrum Nova is a separate chain built on the AnyTrust protocol, which relies on a data availability committee instead of posting all data to Ethereum. It targets gaming and social apps. Some third-party tools, including Nova Arbiscan, Alchemy and Tenderly, dropped Nova support on January 31, 2026, though Arbitrum’s documentation says Nova assets remain accessible and withdrawable. Unless an app tells you it runs on Nova, use Arbitrum One. Sending ARB to your address on the wrong chain is recoverable only if you control the keys and pay to bridge it.

Where to buy ARB: exchanges listing it

We checked ARB spot listings as of October 2026 through exchange support pages and CoinGecko’s market data. The table does not rank exchanges; the column that matters most is whether you can withdraw on Arbitrum One. For broader exchange criteria, our how-to-buy-crypto hub covers verification and funding in general.

Exchange or app ARB market Arbitrum One withdrawals Who can use it
Coinbase ARB/USD Check the network selector on the send screen US and international
Kraken ARB/USD Yes (ARB deposits and withdrawals via Arbitrum One) US, EU, UK and others
Robinhood Buy, sell, transfer Yes; native Arbitrum chain only US; no state restriction listed
Binance ARB/USDT Yes Not available to US residents
OKX ARB/USDT, ARB/USDC Yes Not available to US residents
Bybit, Bitget, Gate ARB/USDT Check network list Generally not open to US residents

One operational note: in June 2026 Kraken posted an incident about delays on Arbitrum One deposits and withdrawals for USDC. Before sending funds on any layer 2, check the exchange’s status page, especially if the amount is time-sensitive.

How to buy tokens on a layer 2 network directly

Instead of buying ARB on an exchange, you can withdraw ETH or USDC to Arbitrum One and swap there. This is also the general answer to how to buy crypto on layer 2 networks: get the base asset onto the layer 2 cheaply, then use a decentralized exchange that lives on it.

  1. Withdraw ETH on Arbitrum One from an exchange that supports it, to your MetaMask, Rabby or other EVM wallet. Arriving ETH covers both your swap and your gas.
  2. Add the Arbitrum One network to your wallet if it is not already there (chain ID 42161).
  3. Open a DEX on Arbitrum. Uniswap and Camelot are the two most established. Type the URL yourself rather than clicking ads.
  4. Select ARB by contract, pasting 0x912ce5…e6548 rather than searching the ticker. Fake “ARB” tokens with copied names exist.
  5. Review price impact and slippage. ARB pools are deep, so small orders should see minimal impact; keep slippage near the default.
  6. Confirm and check Arbiscan for the completed swap.

The same method works for any Arbitrum-native token, from GMX to stablecoins; our list of Arbitrum DeFi projects shows what people do once they are there. If your funds are already on Ethereum or another chain and you want to move them, that is bridging, covered in our guide to bridging to Arbitrum. For a wider look at the rollup landscape, see our overview of layer 2 crypto.

Gas: why ARB holders still need ETH

This is the most common surprise for new ARB holders. Arbitrum One uses ETH as its native gas token. ARB is an ERC-20 token on that chain; it pays for nothing at the protocol level. If you withdraw only ARB to a fresh wallet, you can see it but cannot send, swap or delegate it until you add some ETH on Arbitrum One.

The fix is cheap. Arbitrum fees are typically a fraction of a cent to a few cents per transaction, so a small ETH balance lasts a long time. Many exchanges let you withdraw ETH directly on Arbitrum One; do that in the same session as your ARB withdrawal. Do not send ETH on Ethereum mainnet by accident: it would land on the right address but the wrong chain, and bridging it costs more than the small amount you needed.

Unlocks and delegating your ARB votes

ARB has a fixed supply of 10 billion. After a one-year cliff, tokens for Offchain Labs’ team, advisors and investors began unlocking in March 2024 at about 92.65 million ARB per month. Reporting places the final monthly tranche around March 2027, with a separate Arbitrum Foundation lockup ending around April 2027. Unlock events add supply that recipients may sell; check a token-unlock tracker for the remaining schedule rather than assuming a date.

Delegating to vote in the Arbitrum DAO

ARB’s main function is governance. Holding ARB does not automatically count as voting power; you must delegate, either to yourself or to a delegate you trust. Tally, the interface long used for this, began winding down in March 2026, and the Arbitrum Foundation now runs its own governance portal (built with Offchain Labs, with a Snapshot-hosted backup). As of October 2026 the steps are:

  • Connect the wallet holding ARB on Arbitrum One.
  • Open the Arbitrum DAO page and choose to delegate to yourself or to a named delegate.
  • Confirm the transaction (paid in ETH on Arbitrum One).

You can change your delegate at any time, and delegating does not move or lock your tokens. ARB on an exchange cannot be delegated, which is one practical reason to withdraw it.

FAQ

Where can I buy ARB in the US?

As of October 2026, US residents can buy ARB on Coinbase, Kraken and Robinhood. Robinhood withdraws ARB only on the native Arbitrum chain, and Kraken supports Arbitrum One for ARB transfers. Binance, OKX and Bybit list ARB but do not accept US customers. You can also swap ETH for ARB on Uniswap on Arbitrum.

How do I buy tokens on layer 2?

Withdraw ETH or USDC from an exchange directly to the layer 2 network, such as Arbitrum One, Base or Optimism, using an EVM wallet. Then swap on a decentralized exchange running on that layer 2, selecting the token by contract address. Keep a little ETH for gas, since most Ethereum layer 2s charge fees in ETH.

Do I need ETH to use ARB?

Yes, if you hold ARB in your own wallet on Arbitrum One. Gas is paid in ETH, so you need a small ETH balance on Arbitrum to transfer, swap or delegate ARB. If ARB stays on an exchange, you do not need ETH, but you also cannot vote with it.

Should I withdraw ARB on Arbitrum One or Ethereum?

Arbitrum One for most people. It is ARB’s native network, withdrawal fees are usually lower, transactions cost cents, and DAO delegation happens there. Choose Ethereum mainnet only if an Ethereum-based app specifically requires ARB on layer 1. Avoid Arbitrum Nova unless an app tells you it runs there.
