An ASIC miner (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) is a specialized device built exclusively for cryptocurrency mining. Unlike GPUs that can do many tasks, ASICs do one thing — mine a specific algorithm — but they do it thousands of times more efficiently.

How ASICs Work

ASIC chips are designed from the ground up to perform one cryptographic algorithm (like SHA-256 for Bitcoin). By eliminating all unnecessary computing capabilities, they achieve maximum hashing efficiency — measured in terahashes per second (TH/s) per watt consumed. See Proof of Work guide.

ASIC Mining vs GPU Mining

  • Speed: ASICs are 100,000x+ faster than GPUs for their specific algorithm
  • Efficiency: ASICs produce far more hashes per watt of electricity
  • Flexibility: GPUs can mine multiple algorithms and be resold for gaming. ASICs can only mine one algorithm
  • Cost: ASICs: $3,000-$8,000. Gaming GPUs: $500-$2,000
  • Noise: ASICs are extremely loud (70-80+ dB). GPUs are manageable for home use

What Coins Use ASICs?

  • Bitcoin (SHA-256): Dominated by Bitmain Antminer and MicroBT Whatsminer. See hardware guide
  • Litecoin/Dogecoin (Scrypt): Merged-mined on Scrypt ASICs. See LTC guide
  • Kaspa (kHeavyHash): New ASIC miners available. See Kaspa guide

Some coins (Monero, Ethereum pre-merge) are designed to be ASIC-resistant, keeping mining accessible to CPUs/GPUs. See Monero guide.

Getting Started

  1. Choose your coin and algorithm
  2. Select hardware. See hardware comparison
  3. Calculate profitability. See profitability guide
  4. Join a mining pool. See pool guide
  5. Set up power and cooling (ASICs need 240V and serious ventilation)

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ASIC miners worth it?

Only with electricity under $0.06/kWh. At average residential rates, buying Bitcoin directly is usually more cost-effective. See profitability analysis.

Can I mine Bitcoin without an ASIC?

Technically yes, but it’s not viable. CPUs and GPUs are millions of times less efficient than ASICs for Bitcoin mining. You’d spend far more on electricity than you’d earn. See mining guide.

How loud are ASIC miners?

Very loud — 70-80+ dB, similar to a vacuum cleaner running continuously. Not suitable for living spaces.
