Balancer is a DEX protocol that introduced customizable weighted liquidity pools — allowing pools with any number of tokens in any ratio, not just the standard 50/50 pairs used by Uniswap. Think of it as a self-rebalancing portfolio that earns trading fees.
History
Founded by Fernando Martinelli and Mike McDonald. Launched in 2020. Balancer V2 improved gas efficiency. Balancer V3 (2024+) introduced “Hooks” — custom logic that extends pool behavior. See DEX guide.
How Weighted Pools Work
Unlike Uniswap (50/50 pools), Balancer supports any weighting — 80/20, 60/20/20, or even 8-token pools. A pool weighted 80% ETH / 20% USDC provides less impermanent loss on ETH price changes than a 50/50 pool. Pools automatically rebalance to maintain their target weights. See IL guide and liquidity pool guide.
Key Features
- Weighted pools: Custom asset ratios (80/20, multi-token)
- Boosted pools: Idle liquidity automatically earns lending yield (Aave). See Aave
- veBAL: Lock BAL for governance and fee sharing (similar to Curve’s veCRV). See Curve
- LBP: Liquidity Bootstrapping Pools for fair token launches
Tokenomics
BAL: 100M max supply. veBAL: Lock BAL for governance + protocol fee sharing. See tokenomics.
Pros and Cons
- Pro: Customizable weighted pools reduce IL for specific assets
- Pro: Multi-token pools enable portfolio-like DeFi positions
- Pro: Boosted pools earn lending yield on idle capital
- Con: Smaller volume than Uniswap and Curve
- Con: Complex pool types confuse new users
- Con: veBAL model adds governance complexity
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Balancer safe to use?
Balancer has been audited but all DeFi carries smart contract risk. Use established protocols and start with small amounts.
Is Balancer a good investment?
Evaluate based on real revenue, TVL growth, and token utility. Best as a small DeFi allocation alongside BTC and ETH.
How do I use Balancer?
Connect a Web3 wallet (MetaMask or Phantom) to the protocol’s website. Start with small amounts to learn the mechanics.
