Fantom is a high-speed Layer 1 blockchain built for DeFi, now rebranding to Sonic with a new chain and upgraded technology. Known for its Lachesis consensus mechanism and association with Andre Cronje (Yearn Finance founder).
History and Founders
Founded by Michael Kong (CEO) and Dr. Ahn Byung Ik, launched in 2019. Fantom gained major attention in 2021-2022 when Andre Cronje (founder of Yearn Finance and one of DeFi’s most respected builders) began actively developing on Fantom, bringing a wave of DeFi protocols. Cronje’s temporary departure in 2022 caused a price crash, but he returned. Sonic represents the next evolution — a new chain with improved performance and Fantom token migration.
How Fantom/Sonic Works
Uses the Lachesis aBFT (asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant) consensus — enabling 1-second finality and high throughput. EVM-compatible, making Ethereum dApp deployment easy. Sonic upgrades this with the Fantom Virtual Machine (FVM) for even faster execution. See blockchain guide.
Tokenomics
FTM supply: 3.175B. Migrating to S (Sonic) token. Staking: ~4-6% APY. See tokenomics and staking guide.
Ecosystem
- DeFi: SpookySwap, Beethoven X, Geist Finance. See DeFi guide
- Andre Cronje projects: Solidly, and new Sonic-native protocols
- Gaming and NFTs: Growing ecosystem on Sonic
Pros and Cons
- Pro: Andre Cronje involvement (one of DeFi’s top builders)
- Pro: Very fast finality (1 second)
- Pro: EVM-compatible, easy migration
- Con: FTM → Sonic migration creates uncertainty
- Con: Andre Cronje’s departures/returns create volatility
- Con: Smaller ecosystem than major L1 competitors
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Fantom now Sonic?
Fantom is transitioning to Sonic — a new chain with upgraded technology. FTM tokens migrate to S (Sonic) tokens.
Is Andre Cronje still involved?
Yes — after temporarily leaving in 2022, Andre Cronje returned and is actively building on Sonic.
Is FTM a good investment?
Higher risk due to the Sonic migration and Andre Cronje’s unpredictable involvement. Potential upside if Sonic gains DeFi traction.
