History and Founders
THORChain was developed by a pseudonymous team (deliberately anonymous to maximize decentralization). Built on Cosmos SDK, launched in 2021. The protocol has processed billions in cross-chain volume despite multiple exploits in its early days that were recovered from.
How THORChain Works
- Native swaps: Swap real BTC for real ETH — not wrapped versions. The protocol holds native assets in vaults secured by RUNE-bonded node operators
- Continuous liquidity pools: Similar to Uniswap but cross-chain. Each pool pairs an asset with RUNE
- Economic security: Node operators must bond 2x the value of assets in their vaults in RUNE — aligning incentives

Tokenomics
RUNE: 500M max supply. Utility: Every pool requires RUNE pairing (1:1 value). Node operators bond RUNE. As TVL grows, RUNE demand grows proportionally — a deterministic value accrual model. See tokenomics.
