How to Use MetaMask: Complete Beginner’s Guide — crypto wallet and security

Last Updated: March 2026

MetaMask is the most popular crypto wallet in the world—the gateway to DeFi, NFTs, and the entire Ethereum ecosystem. If you want to do anything beyond buying crypto on an exchange, you’ll likely need MetaMask. This step-by-step guide covers everything from installation to your first DeFi transaction.

What Is MetaMask?

MetaMask is a free cryptocurrency wallet that works as a browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, Brave) and mobile app. It stores your private keys, lets you send and receive crypto, and connects to decentralized applications (dApps) across Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Polygon, and other EVM-compatible chains.

Think of MetaMask as your passport to Web3—without it, you can’t access most DeFi protocols, mint NFTs, or interact with decentralized exchanges. See our Web3 guide and DEX guide.

Setting Up MetaMask

Step 1: Install

  1. Go to metamask.io (verify the URL carefully—phishing sites exist)
  2. Click “Download” and install the browser extension or mobile app
  3. Click “Create a New Wallet”
  4. Create a strong password for the extension

Step 2: Save Your Seed Phrase

This is the most critical step. MetaMask will show you a 12-word seed phrase.

  • Write it down on paper immediately—in the exact order shown
  • Store it somewhere safe (fireproof safe, safety deposit box)
  • NEVER store it digitally (no photos, no cloud, no notes app)
  • NEVER share it with anyone—MetaMask support will never ask for it

See our seed phrase guide and security guide for details.

Step 3: Fund Your Wallet

Your MetaMask wallet starts empty. Fund it by:

  1. Buy ETH on an exchange (Coinbase, Kraken). See exchange guide
  2. Withdraw ETH to your MetaMask address (copy it from the top of the MetaMask interface)
  3. Wait for the transfer to confirm (1-5 minutes on Ethereum)

See our sending guide for detailed transfer instructions.

Adding Networks

MetaMask defaults to Ethereum mainnet, but you’ll want to add Layer 2 networks for cheaper transactions:

  • Arbitrum: Visit arbitrum.io, click “Add to MetaMask” (or manually add: Chain ID 42161)
  • Base: Visit base.org, click “Add to MetaMask” (Chain ID 8453)
  • Optimism: Chain ID 10
  • Polygon: Chain ID 137

Using Layer 2s reduces gas fees from dollars to cents. See our Layer 2 guide and gas fees guide.

Using MetaMask with DeFi

Connecting to a dApp

  1. Visit a DeFi protocol (e.g., app.uniswap.org). See our Uniswap guide
  2. Click “Connect Wallet”
  3. Select “MetaMask”
  4. Approve the connection in the MetaMask popup
  5. You’re connected—the dApp can now see your balance and request transactions

Approving Transactions

When you interact with DeFi (swaps, staking, lending), MetaMask shows a popup with transaction details:

  • Gas fee: The network fee for the transaction. See gas guide
  • Action: What the transaction will do (swap tokens, approve spending, etc.)
  • Always review before confirming. Malicious sites can request approvals to drain your wallet

Token Approvals

Before using tokens in DeFi, you must “approve” the smart contract to spend them. This is normal but creates risk—an unlimited approval lets the contract access all your tokens of that type.

  • Set custom approval amounts when possible (not “unlimited”)
  • Regularly revoke unused approvals at revoke.cash
  • See our scam prevention guide

MetaMask Security Tips

  1. Never share your seed phrase—no legitimate site or support will ask for it
  2. Verify URLs carefully—bookmark DeFi sites you use regularly
  3. Use a hardware wallet with MetaMask—Ledger and Trezor connect to MetaMask for the best of both worlds. See hardware wallet guide
  4. Lock MetaMask when not in use—click the account icon > Lock
  5. Don’t interact with unknown tokens that appear in your wallet—they may be scam tokens
  6. Revoke approvals regularly—use revoke.cash to review and revoke smart contract permissions

Common MetaMask Issues

  • “Insufficient funds for gas”: You need ETH (or the network’s native token) to pay transaction fees, even when sending other tokens
  • Transaction stuck pending: Gas price was too low. Speed up (pay more gas) or cancel in MetaMask settings
  • Tokens not showing: Click “Import tokens” and paste the token’s contract address. The tokens are in your wallet—MetaMask just needs to know to display them
  • Wrong network: Switch networks in MetaMask to match the chain your tokens are on

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MetaMask safe?

MetaMask itself is secure and open-source. The risks come from phishing (fake MetaMask sites), malicious dApps (draining approvals), and user error (losing seed phrases). Follow the security tips above and you’ll be well protected.

Does MetaMask work with Bitcoin?

MetaMask doesn’t natively support Bitcoin (BTC is on a different blockchain). It supports Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains. For Bitcoin, use a dedicated wallet. See our wallet comparison. You can use Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) on Ethereum through MetaMask—see our WBTC guide.

Can I connect MetaMask to a hardware wallet?

Yes—this is the recommended setup for serious amounts. Your Ledger or Trezor signs transactions while MetaMask provides the browser interface. See hardware wallet guide.

Is MetaMask free?

Yes. MetaMask is free to install and use. You only pay blockchain gas fees for transactions, which go to the network validators—not MetaMask. MetaMask’s built-in swap feature charges a 0.875% service fee on swaps (using a DEX directly is cheaper).
