Arweave (AR) is a decentralized storage protocol designed for permanent data storage. Unlike Filecoin (pay ongoing fees), Arweave lets you pay once to store data forever. It’s the “Library of Alexandria” of the internet — preserving information permanently on-chain.
History and Founders
Founded by Sam Williams in 2017 (originally as Archain, rebranded to Arweave in 2018). Williams, a PhD student at the University of Kent, envisioned a permanent web archive. Arweave also created AO — a hyper-parallel computing environment running on top of Arweave’s permanent storage.
How Arweave Works
Arweave uses a “blockweave” structure where each block links to both the previous block and a random earlier block, creating a web of interconnected data. Miners must store old data to mine new blocks (Proof of Access). A one-time endowment fee covers storage costs for 200+ years based on declining storage cost projections. See blockchain guide.
Tokenomics
Supply: 66M AR max. Utility: Pay for permanent storage. Miners earn AR for storing and serving data. See tokenomics guide.
Use Cases
- Permanent web archiving: Websites, documents, research preserved forever
- NFT storage: Truly permanent metadata storage. See NFT guide
- AO computing: Parallel computing environment built on permanent storage
- Censorship resistance: Data that can never be removed or altered
Arweave vs Filecoin
- Arweave: Pay once, store forever. Permanent storage. Simpler economics
- Filecoin: Pay ongoing fees. Rental model. More like decentralized AWS. See Filecoin guide
Pros and Cons
- Pro: Unique permanent storage model (no recurring fees)
- Pro: AO computing adds processing capability on top of storage
- Pro: Important for NFT permanence and censorship resistance
- Con: “Permanent” storage relies on economic assumptions about future costs
- Con: Smaller ecosystem than major L1s
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Arweave storage really permanent?
Arweave’s endowment model is designed to fund storage for 200+ years based on declining storage cost projections. The data persists as long as the network operates.
How much does Arweave storage cost?
A one-time fee based on data size. Typically very affordable — a few cents per KB. No recurring payments.
What is AO?
AO is a hyper-parallel computing environment built on Arweave’s permanent storage layer, enabling compute alongside permanent data.
