Pendle lets you trade future yield — separating yield-bearing tokens into principal and yield components that can be traded independently. It’s one of DeFi’s most innovative protocols, turning yield into a tradeable asset.
History and Founders
Founded by TN Lee and GT. Launched in 2021 on Ethereum, expanded to Arbitrum and other chains. Pendle gained massive traction during the points/airdrop meta of 2024, as traders used it to speculate on airdrop yields.
How Pendle Works
Pendle splits yield-bearing tokens (like stETH, sUSDe) into two parts:
- PT (Principal Token): The underlying asset redeemable at maturity. Buy at a discount = lock in a fixed yield
- YT (Yield Token): All future yield until maturity. Buy if you think yields will be higher than priced
This creates a yield market — like an interest rate derivatives market but for DeFi. See DeFi guide and yield farming.
Use Cases
- Fixed yield: Buy PT at a discount to lock in guaranteed DeFi returns
- Yield speculation: Buy YT if you think staking/airdrop yields will increase
- Points farming: Pendle became the primary tool for speculating on airdrop points
Tokenomics
PENDLE: Governance and fee sharing. vePENDLE (vote-escrowed) model — lock PENDLE to earn protocol fees and boost yields. See tokenomics.
Pros and Cons
- Pro: Genuinely novel DeFi primitive — no one else does yield trading
- Pro: Real utility during points/airdrop meta
- Pro: Growing TVL and multi-chain expansion
- Con: Complex — steep learning curve for new users
- Con: Depends on yield-bearing token ecosystem (if yields compress, less demand)
- Con: Points meta may not sustain long-term
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pendle hard to use?
Yes — it’s one of DeFi’s more complex protocols. Understanding PT/YT splits and maturity dates takes time. Start by buying PT for simple fixed yield before trying YT speculation.
Is Pendle safe?
Pendle has been audited and has processed billions without exploit. The risk is more in understanding the products than smart contract vulnerability. See security guide.
