The hard part of how to buy Bitcoin Cash isn’t finding a seller. It’s making sure you end up with BCH and that it lands on the BCH chain. Bitcoin Cash split from Bitcoin in 2017, and Bitcoin SV split from Bitcoin Cash in 2018. All three can use addresses that look the same. In the US, BCH is sold by Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Robinhood, Binance.US, and by PayPal and Venmo, which carry only a handful of coins. Cash App sells only Bitcoin. Once you’ve bought BCH, use a CashAddr-format address (bitcoincash:q…) for withdrawals.
Key takeaways
- BCH, BTC and BSV are three different coins with shared history. Check the ticker before you press buy.
- PayPal and Venmo both sell BCH and allow transfers to external wallets. Cash App doesn’t sell BCH at all.
- CashAddr addresses (bitcoincash:q… or p…) can’t be confused with Bitcoin addresses. Legacy “1…” addresses can.
- Skip any “BCH (BEP-20)” withdrawal option unless you deliberately want a pegged token on BNB Chain.
- Grayscale’s Bitcoin Cash Trust (BCHG) still trades over the counter. Its ETF conversion filing was pending as of late October 2026.
BCH, BTC or BSV? Make sure you’re buying the right coin
Many people searching “bitcoin vs bitcoin cash?” are about to buy one and aren’t sure which. We cover the debate itself in our Bitcoin Cash vs Bitcoin comparison. For buying purposes, this table is what you need:
| Bitcoin (BTC) | Bitcoin Cash (BCH) | Bitcoin SV (BSV) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Origin | Original chain, 2009 | Forked from BTC, August 2017 | Forked from BCH, November 2018 |
| Typical ticker on apps | BTC | BCH | BSV |
| Native address style | bc1… (also legacy 1… and 3…) | bitcoincash:q… / p… (CashAddr), also legacy 1… / 3… | Legacy 1… style |
| Sold on Robinhood, PayPal, Venmo? | Yes | Yes | No |
On some older or smaller platforms, BCH appears as “BCC” or “BCHABC”, leftovers from earlier forks and naming disputes. Today, BCH is the standard ticker on every major app. If a platform lists something called “Bitcoin Cash” with a ticker you don’t recognise, check its contract or network page before buying. For background on why the chain exists, see our Bitcoin Cash explainer.
How to buy Bitcoin Cash: apps and exchanges (including PayPal and Venmo)
We checked each platform’s own published market listings or supported-asset page in October 2026. Choose based on three things you can check: whether it serves your state or country, whether it lets you withdraw BCH to your own wallet, and what it charges once spread and fees are combined.
| Platform | Region | Withdraw BCH to your own wallet? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | US and many other countries | Yes | BCH-USD order book on Coinbase’s exchange. |
| Kraken | US (state limits) and international | Yes | Also offers margin, which beginners can ignore. |
| Gemini | US and international | Yes | BCH/USD spot pair. |
| Robinhood | US | Through Robinhood crypto transfers. Check that BCH sends are enabled for your account. | BCH is on Robinhood’s supported list with no state exclusion noted. |
| Binance.US | US (not all states) | Yes | BCH/USD and BCH/USDT. |
| PayPal | US | Yes (external transfers since 2022) | Simple, but the price includes a spread. Check your limits in the app. |
| Venmo | US | Yes (external transfers since 2023) | Same crypto partner as PayPal, inside the Venmo app. |
| Cash App | US | Not applicable | Sells Bitcoin only. No BCH. |
| Binance, OKX, Bitvavo, Uphold | Mostly outside the US (Uphold also serves US users) | Yes | Check the network list before withdrawing (see below). |
The PayPal and Venmo route. These are often the quickest way for an American to buy a small amount of BCH, because you may already have a verified account. Both apps support transfers to external wallets for BCH. A few cautions: weekly buy and send limits apply and depend on your account, so check them in the Crypto tab before you plan a large purchase. PayPal’s guidance says crypto transfers are final and can’t be reversed. Network fees are charged on external sends. Our PayPal crypto guide explains how its pricing and limits work.
CashAddr vs legacy: the address mistake that loses coins
This is where BCH buyers actually lose money. Bitcoin Cash kept Bitcoin’s original address format after the fork. A legacy BCH address starting with “1” or “3” looks exactly like a Bitcoin address. In 2018, the network adopted CashAddr, which adds a prefix and a different character set:
- CashAddr:
bitcoincash:q...for ordinary single-key addresses andbitcoincash:p...for script addresses. Some wallets hide the prefix and show only the “q…” part. - Legacy:
1...or3..., the same format Bitcoin uses.
How coins go missing:
- You withdraw BTC to a legacy-format BCH address, or BCH to a legacy-format BTC address. The transaction succeeds on the chain you sent from, but the receiving wallet is watching the other chain.
- If the destination is a wallet whose private key or seed you control, you can usually recover the coins by importing that seed into a wallet for the other chain.
- If the destination is an exchange deposit address, recovery depends entirely on the exchange. Some charge a fee to recover, and some refuse.
Rules that prevent this:
- Use CashAddr whenever the sending platform accepts it. A CashAddr string can’t be pasted into a BTC withdrawal by accident.
- Choose the network labelled Bitcoin Cash, not “BEP-20” or “BNB Smart Chain”. Some exchanges list a pegged BCH token on BNB Chain in their withdrawal menu. It’s a different asset, and a BCH wallet won’t see it.
- Don’t use BSV wallets for BCH. Both use legacy-style addresses, and sending one coin to the other chain is the classic three-way-fork mistake.
Choosing a Bitcoin Cash wallet that supports CashTokens
Since the May 2023 network upgrade, Bitcoin Cash supports CashTokens, which are fungible tokens and NFTs issued directly on the BCH chain. Each May, the network schedules a protocol upgrade. The 2026 specification added script features such as loops and reusable functions. Your wallet doesn’t need to handle tokens if you only hold BCH, but a CashTokens-aware wallet can show token balances that would otherwise be invisible.
- Electron Cash: a long-running desktop wallet with CashAddr support and hardware-wallet integration.
- Paytaca and Cashonize: BCH-focused wallets that support CashTokens.
- Exodus: a multi-asset wallet, convenient if you hold several coins. Check its current CashTokens display support.
- Ledger and Trezor: both support BCH. Pair them with a compatible desktop wallet for CashAddr.
After you set up a wallet, send a small test amount from your exchange or PayPal first. BCH blocks average about 10 minutes, and exchanges usually wait for several confirmations.
Watch for upgrade-day pauses. Because the network upgrades every May, exchanges and custodians briefly pause BCH deposits and withdrawals around each activation. Paxos, the crypto partner behind PayPal and Venmo, published exactly that kind of notice ahead of the 15 May 2026 upgrade. If a withdrawal shows “suspended” in mid-May, that’s usually why. Wait for the platform to confirm it has reopened rather than trying a different network option. Also be aware that PayPal and Venmo only send BCH on the Bitcoin Cash chain itself. They won’t show CashTokens, so token activity belongs in a dedicated wallet.
Fund products: Grayscale’s BCH trust and ETF status
If you want price exposure through a brokerage account rather than holding coins, the Grayscale Bitcoin Cash Trust (ticker BCHG) has traded over the counter for years. On 11 September 2026, Grayscale filed an amended S-3 registration with the SEC to convert the trust into an exchange-traded fund on NYSE Arca. As of late October 2026, the SEC’s EDGAR database showed no effectiveness notice or prospectus for the conversion, so BCHG still trades OTC. OTC trusts can trade at a premium or discount to the value of the BCH they hold, and their fees are typically higher than spot ETFs’. Neither gives you coins you can send.

FAQ
Can I buy Bitcoin Cash with PayPal or Venmo?
Yes. US users can buy BCH in the PayPal and Venmo apps, and both allow transfers to an external BCH wallet. Purchases include a spread, network fees apply to external sends, and weekly limits depend on your account. Transfers are final, so paste a BCH address, ideally in CashAddr format, and send a small test amount first.
Bitcoin vs Bitcoin Cash: are they the same coin?
No. Bitcoin Cash forked from Bitcoin in August 2017, and the two have been separate chains with separate prices since then. Bitcoin SV is a further fork from 2018. Exchanges list them under different tickers (BTC, BCH, BSV), and a wallet for one won’t automatically show the others.
Does Cash App sell Bitcoin Cash?
No. Cash App supports only Bitcoin. If you want BCH, use an app that lists it, such as PayPal, Venmo, Robinhood, Coinbase, Kraken or Gemini. Never send BCH to a Cash App bitcoin address. Cash App won’t credit it, and recovering it may not be possible.
What is a CashAddr address?
CashAddr is the Bitcoin Cash address format introduced in 2018. It starts with “bitcoincash:” followed by “q” or “p”. It was created so BCH addresses can’t be confused with Bitcoin’s legacy “1” and “3” addresses. Most wallets and exchanges accept it, and some still show legacy format as an option.
