How to Buy Hedera (HBAR): Exchanges, Account IDs and ETFs

Hedera does not use ordinary crypto addresses. A Hedera account is a number such as 0.0.123456, it has to exist on the network before it can receive HBAR, and many exchanges need a memo to credit your deposit to their shared account. Get those details right and the rest of how to buy Hedera is straightforward: HBAR trades on Coinbase, Kraken, Robinhood and Binance as of October 2026. Since late 2025 there is also a fund route, the Canary HBAR ETF, for people who want exposure in a brokerage account. This guide explains both.

The short version

  • Hedera accounts are IDs in the format 0.0.x, often with a checksum suffix; some also have an EVM-style 0x alias.
  • Robinhood requires a memo to receive HBAR, and Binance.US lists HBAR among memo coins; leaving the memo out can strand a deposit.
  • HashPack and Kabila create a Hedera account for you, which can involve a small network fee.
  • The Canary HBAR ETF (ticker HBR) began trading on Nasdaq on October 28, 2025.
  • Native HBAR staking has no lock-up and no slashing; tokens built on Hedera need “association” before you can receive them.

How Hedera accounts differ from normal crypto addresses

Hedera is a proof-of-stake public ledger governed by a council of large organizations; our Hedera overview covers the hashgraph consensus and governance. For a buyer, the account model is the part that differs from Bitcoin, Ethereum or Solana.

Typical blockchain Hedera
What you send to An address derived from your public key An account ID like 0.0.123456 (shard.realm.number)
Does it need creating first? No; any valid address can receive Yes; the account is an on-chain entity created by a transaction (or auto-created in some cases)
Checksum Built into the address format Optional suffix, e.g. 0.0.123456-vfmkw, which catches typos
EVM compatibility Varies Accounts with ECDSA keys can have a 0x EVM address alias for MetaMask-style apps
Memo Rare Commonly required when depositing to exchanges

Why exchanges ask for an HBAR memo

Many exchanges receive all customers’ HBAR into one Hedera account and use the memo to tell deposits apart. Robinhood’s crypto-transfers page states plainly that a memo is required to receive HBAR, and that its HBAR addresses use the account ID format. Binance.US lists HBAR among coins that need a memo, warning that a missing or wrong memo can mean lost assets. When you withdraw to your own wallet, leave the memo blank unless your wallet tells you otherwise; personal accounts do not need one.

Buying is the easy part; sizing the position is harder. Our Hedera price prediction walks through scenario ranges for 2026, 2027 and 2030 and the metrics that would move them.

Hedera also supports auto account creation: sending HBAR to an EVM alias that does not yet exist can create a “hollow” account that becomes fully usable once its owner signs a transaction. It works, but for a first purchase it is simpler to create the account in a wallet and withdraw to its 0.0.x ID.

Where to buy Hedera: exchanges and apps selling HBAR

We checked HBAR spot markets as of October 2026 on exchange support pages and CoinGecko’s market data. The table is not a ranking; the useful columns are US access and the memo note. For general account setup, see our how-to-buy-crypto hub, and for platform-by-platform comparisons see our exchange comparison.

Platform HBAR market Deposits and withdrawals Who can use it
Coinbase HBAR/USD spot Hedera network; follow memo prompt on deposit US and international
Kraken HBAR/USD spot Hedera network; follow memo prompt on deposit US, EU, UK and others
Robinhood Buy, sell, transfer Account ID format; memo required to receive US; no state restriction listed
Binance.US HBAR spot Memo required on deposits US states it serves
Binance HBAR/USDT, HBAR/USDC Hedera network Not available to US residents
OKX, Bybit, Gate HBAR/USDT Check network and memo fields Generally not open to US residents

Exchange interfaces change, so treat the deposit screen as the authority: if it shows a memo or “tag” field next to the HBAR account ID, it is required.

How to buy Hedera and withdraw to a HashPack account

HashPack is the most widely used Hedera wallet, available as a browser extension and mobile app; Kabila is another Hedera-native option, and Ledger hardware wallets support HBAR through compatible apps. Here is the HashPack path:

  1. Install HashPack from its official site or app store and create a wallet. Write down the recovery phrase offline.
  2. Create the account. Unlike most wallets, HashPack must create a Hedera account on-chain, which assigns your 0.0.x ID. Hedera charges a small fee for account creation; wallets have at times covered it or offered an option to activate the account by receiving funds. Follow the prompts in the current version.
  3. Choose the key type if asked. ECDSA keys give the account an EVM alias, which helps with EVM-style dApps; ED25519 is the traditional Hedera key type. Either can hold HBAR.
  4. Copy your account ID, ideally with its checksum suffix, from the wallet.
  5. Withdraw from the exchange on the Hedera network to that ID. Leave the memo blank for a personal wallet. Send a test amount first.
  6. Confirm on HashScan, Hedera’s explorer, by searching your account ID.

A common mistake runs the other way: sending HBAR from your wallet to an exchange without the memo. If that happens, do not send again. Open a support ticket with the exchange, including the transaction ID from HashScan, the amount and your account details; most exchanges can trace memo-less deposits, though it may take time and sometimes a fee.

Keep a small HBAR balance for fees. Hedera’s transaction fees are set in US dollar terms and paid in HBAR, and they are typically fractions of a cent for transfers.

HBAR ETF or HBAR coins?

The Canary HBAR ETF (HBR) launched on Nasdaq on October 28, 2025, making HBAR one of the first assets after bitcoin and ether to get a US spot ETF. At launch it carried a 0.95% sponsor fee, with assets held by BitGo Trust and Coinbase Custody; check Canary’s current fact sheet for today’s fee and holdings. Other issuers, including Grayscale, filed HBAR ETF proposals in 2025; our crypto ETF list tracks which have actually launched.

HBAR coins HBAR ETF (e.g. HBR)
Where you buy Crypto exchange or app Any brokerage that offers the fund
Ongoing cost None after purchase (self-custody) Annual expense ratio deducted from the fund
Staking rewards Yes, via native staking Only if the fund stakes and passes rewards through; check the prospectus
Using Hedera apps Yes No
Account setup Account ID, memo rules, key backup None beyond the brokerage
Retirement accounts Generally not, unless via a crypto IRA Often possible in IRAs that allow ETFs

The ETF suits people who want price exposure without handling account IDs and memos. Holding coins suits people who want to stake or use Hedera dApps.

After buying: staking and token association

How to stake HBAR tokens

Hedera’s native staking is unusually low-friction. You stake your whole account balance to a network node from your wallet; there is no lock-up period, no minimum beyond your balance, and no slashing, so your HBAR stays spendable. Rewards accrue per full staking period (one day) and are paid when your account next transacts or when you claim them. Reward rates are set by the network and change over time, so check the current figure in your wallet rather than relying on a published number. Our step-by-step guide to staking Hedera covers node selection and reward timing in detail.

Token association

If you later buy tokens issued on the Hedera Token Service, such as stablecoins or project tokens on Hedera DEXs, your account must be “associated” with each token before it can receive it. Each association is a small transaction fee in HBAR. Accounts can also have automatic association slots, which let them receive new tokens without a manual step; HashPack lets you set how many. If a token transfer to you fails, a missing association is the likely cause. HBAR itself never needs association.

FAQ

What is a Hedera account ID?

It is your address on Hedera, written as three numbers, for example 0.0.123456 (shard, realm and account number). It may include a checksum suffix such as 0.0.123456-vfmkw to catch typos. The account must be created on the network before it can receive HBAR, which wallets like HashPack handle for you.

Do I need a memo to send HBAR?

When depositing to an exchange, usually yes. Many exchanges, including Robinhood and Binance.US, require a memo because they pool customer HBAR in shared accounts. When sending to your own HashPack or Kabila wallet, no memo is needed. Always copy the memo exactly from the exchange’s deposit screen.

Is there an HBAR ETF?

Yes. The Canary HBAR ETF trades on Nasdaq under the ticker HBR and began trading on October 28, 2025. It holds HBAR directly. Check the fund’s current expense ratio and whether it stakes before buying, and see our crypto ETF list for any newer HBAR funds.

Where can I buy HBAR in the US?

As of October 2026, US residents can buy HBAR on Coinbase, Kraken, Robinhood and Binance.US, and can buy the Canary HBAR ETF through a brokerage account. Global Binance, OKX and Bybit list HBAR but do not accept US customers.
