When you work out how to buy Internet Computer (ICP), most of the effort comes after the trade. The purchase is simple: as of October 2026, Coinbase, Kraken, Binance.US, Binance, OKX and others list ICP. The mistakes happen when you withdraw. ICP has two kinds of identifier: a 64-character account ID and a shorter, dash-separated principal ID. Exchanges and wallets don’t all accept both. This guide explains which one to paste where, how to move ICP into the NNS dapp, and what to know before locking it in a neuron under the rules that changed in 2026.
- Account IDs are 64 hexadecimal characters. Principal IDs look like groups of five letters and numbers separated by dashes.
- Many exchanges still expect the legacy account ID for ICP withdrawals. Copy the address shown under your NNS “Main” account, not your principal, unless the exchange explicitly accepts the other format.
- Coinbase sends ICP on its native network, which Coinbase labels “dfinity.” Robinhood’s US app shows ICP as watch-only.
- Since the 2026 “Mission 70” governance changes, DFINITY’s docs list a maximum neuron dissolve delay of 2 years (down from 8), a 2-week minimum to vote, and a 1 ICP minimum stake.
- ckBTC and ckETH are ICP-native tokens backed 1:1 by BTC and ETH. They aren’t ICP itself.
ICP identifiers: account ID vs principal
Because of the address format, ICP needs a little more care than most coins. Internet Computer is a blockchain built by the DFINITY Foundation. It runs smart contracts called “canisters” and is governed by an on-chain system called the Network Nervous System. Our Internet Computer overview explains the technology. For buying, you only need the two identifier types:
| Account identifier (legacy) | Principal ID / ICRC-1 account | |
|---|---|---|
| Looks like | 64 hex characters, e.g. starting d3e1… |
Groups of letters and digits with dashes, e.g. abcde-fghij-…-cai style |
| What it is | A hash of a principal plus a subaccount. It can’t be reversed back to the principal | Your identity on ICP. The ICRC-1 token standard addresses accounts as principal plus optional subaccount |
| Where you see it | NNS dapp ICP tab, under each account. Most exchange deposit pages | NNS settings, Internet Identity, ICRC-1 token wallets (ckBTC and similar) |
| Exchange support | Widely accepted for ICP withdrawals | Not universally accepted. A DFINITY developer-forum thread notes most CEXs still only parse hex account IDs |
The safe habit: when an exchange asks for an ICP withdrawal address, give it the 64-character account ID from the receiving wallet. If the exchange’s form accepts a principal or an ICRC-1 account string, it will say so. Otherwise assume it doesn’t. Exchange deposit addresses work the same way in reverse. Copy exactly what the exchange shows, and only add a memo if the deposit page displays a memo field.
How to buy Internet Computer: where ICP is listed
We confirmed each listing below against the exchange’s asset page or CoinGecko’s market data in October 2026:
| Exchange | ICP markets | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | ICP/USD, ICP/EUR, ICP/BTC | Withdrawals on the native ICP network (Coinbase labels it “dfinity”) |
| Kraken | ICP/USD, ICP/EUR | Subject to state and country rules |
| Binance.US | ICP/USD, ICP/USDT | States it serves |
| Bitstamp by Robinhood | ICP/USD, ICP/EUR | Separate from the Robinhood app, where ICP is watch-only |
| Binance, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin | Multiple pairs | Not open to US residents (OKX US separate) |
| Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone | ICP/KRW | Korea |
How we compared them: US availability, whether withdrawals go out on native ICP, and fee schedules you can read before you sign up. We aren’t ranking them. Check each one’s current ICP withdrawal fee on its fee page, because these change. For a wider comparison of exchanges, see our best crypto exchange guide, which explains its criteria.
One trap to know about: CoinGecko lists ICP-branded ERC-20 contracts on Ethereum and Base with Uniswap and Aerodrome pools. These are bridged representations, not native ICP. You can’t stake them in the NNS, and they rely on the bridge that created them. If your goal is a neuron, buy native ICP on an exchange.
Sending ICP to the NNS dapp
The NNS dapp is the official web wallet and governance interface, and it’s where neurons live. To move ICP there:
- Create an Internet Identity. Internet Identity is ICP’s login system and uses passkeys (Face ID, Touch ID, a security key or a password manager). Register at least two devices or a recovery method. If you lose access to your Internet Identity, you lose the ICP behind it.
- Open the ICP tab. You’ll see a “Main” account with a long hexadecimal string. That string is the account ID to use for exchange withdrawals.
- Send a test amount. Withdraw a small amount of ICP from the exchange to that account ID and wait for it to appear. The ICP ledger charges a small fixed transfer fee in ICP, and exchanges add their own withdrawal fee on top.
- Send the rest once the test arrives.
If you’d rather not use the NNS dapp right away, ICP can also sit in other self-custody wallets built for the Internet Computer, which often show both identifier formats side by side. Before you rely on any of them, confirm that the wallet displays a 64-character account ID for ICP, because that’s what exchanges will ask for when you withdraw back.
Hardware users can connect a Ledger device to the NNS dapp, which gives the Ledger-held account its own account ID. Exchanges sometimes delay ICP withdrawals during network upgrades. If a transfer stalls, check the exchange’s status page before sending again.
Staking in a neuron
A neuron is ICP locked in the NNS for governance. It earns voting rewards when it votes, either directly or by following other neurons. In 2026 the NNS adopted DFINITY’s “Mission 70” proposals, which aim to cut ICP inflation by at least 70% by the end of 2026. The voting-reward parameters were reworked as part of that. Per DFINITY’s developer documentation, as of October 2026:
| Parameter | Current rule (verify in the NNS dapp) |
|---|---|
| Minimum stake | 1 ICP |
| Maximum dissolve delay | 2 years (previously 8 years. Existing longer neurons were capped in a one-time migration) |
| Minimum dissolve delay to vote | 2 weeks (previously about 6 months) |
| Age bonus | Up to 1.25× after 4 years of not dissolving |
| Rewards | Paid as “maturity,” which you can stake, auto-stake or disburse |
The decision that matters is the dissolve delay. Your ICP can’t be withdrawn until you start dissolving and the delay counts down to zero. A longer delay means more voting power and rewards, but less flexibility if the price falls. We don’t quote a reward rate: it depends on total staked ICP, the new reward settings and your delay, and published estimates disagree. The NNS dapp shows a live estimate when you create the neuron. Our guide to how to stake crypto explains lock-ups in general, and you can find scenario-based outlooks in our ICP price prediction.
Chain-key tokens
After you set up an NNS wallet, you’ll also see ckBTC and ckETH. These are “chain-key” tokens. ICP canisters hold real BTC and ETH using threshold signatures and issue ICRC-1 tokens backed 1:1 by those reserves. They let you use bitcoin or ether value inside ICP apps with fast, low-cost transfers. Keep in mind:
- They use ICRC-1 principal-style accounts, so the identifier confusion above applies here too.
- Converting ckBTC back to native BTC means a withdrawal through the minter canister to a bitcoin address, which takes bitcoin confirmations.
- They aren’t ICP and don’t add to a neuron. Buy ICP itself if you want to stake.

FAQ
Where to buy ICP in the US?
As of October 2026, Coinbase, Kraken, Binance.US and Bitstamp (owned by Robinhood) offer ICP to US customers, subject to state availability. From 1 February 2027, Bitstamp by Robinhood accounts can no longer open new positions (selling and withdrawing still work), and Robinhood is moving customers to its main app. The main Robinhood app lists ICP for watching only. Binance’s global exchange, Bybit and KuCoin list ICP but don’t accept US residents.
ICP account ID vs principal: which should I give an exchange?
Give the 64-character hexadecimal account ID unless the exchange explicitly says it accepts a principal or ICRC-1 account. In the NNS dapp, it’s the long string under your Main account on the ICP tab. Sending a test amount first is cheap insurance, because a transfer the exchange can’t process may take support tickets to recover.
Do I need the NNS dapp to hold ICP?
No. You can keep ICP on an exchange, in third-party ICP wallets, or on a Ledger device. The NNS dapp is required for neuron staking and governance, though, and it’s the official interface. If you only plan to trade, an exchange account works. If you want rewards from a neuron, you’ll need the NNS.
How does ICP neuron staking work after the 2026 changes?
You lock at least 1 ICP and set a dissolve delay. According to DFINITY’s docs, voting needs at least 2 weeks of delay and the maximum is now 2 years. Rewards accrue as maturity when your neuron votes or follows. You can’t withdraw until you start dissolving and the delay runs out, so pick a delay you can live with.
