Most tokens make you pick an exchange; ZRO also makes you pick a chain. It is an omnichain token, natively present on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, BNB Chain, Polygon and Avalanche, and exchanges let you withdraw it to several of them. So the practical answer to how to buy layerzero: buy ZRO on a listed exchange such as Coinbase or Kraken (US) or Binance, OKX and Bybit (elsewhere), then withdraw to the network where you will actually use or store it, keeping that chain’s gas token on hand.
Key takeaways
- ZRO has a fixed 1 billion supply; CoinGecko counted about 400 million circulating on 26 October 2026, when the market cap was roughly $669 million.
- US buyers could use Coinbase, Kraken and Crypto.com in October 2026; Binance.US showed no ZRO market in CoinGecko’s data.
- The withdrawal network decides your fees and which apps can see the tokens. The address format (0x) looks the same on every supported EVM chain.
- ZRO can move between chains later through LayerZero’s own token standard without a wrapped copy, but each transfer costs gas and a messaging fee.
- Investor and contributor tokens continue to unlock monthly into 2027, and the protocol fee switch had not been activated in any vote LayerZero had reported a result for.
How to buy LayerZero on centralized exchanges
ZRO launched on 20 June 2024 and was listed by most large exchanges within days. The table reflects venues with active ZRO order books in CoinGecko’s ticker data on 26 October 2026; regional rules still apply, so confirm in your app. If you want the technology explained first (endpoints, verifier networks and why apps use it), our LayerZero explainer covers that; this page focuses on getting the token.
| Exchange | Who it serves | ZRO pairs |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | US and international | ZRO/USD |
| Kraken | Most US states, UK, EU | ZRO/USD, ZRO/EUR |
| Crypto.com Exchange | US and international | ZRO/USD |
| Binance | Outside the US | USDT, USDC, FDUSD, TRY |
| OKX | Outside the US | USDT, USDC, EUR, TRY |
| Bybit, Bitget, KuCoin, Gate | Outside the US | Mainly USDT |
| Bitfinex | Outside the US | ZRO/USD |
| Bitvavo | EU | ZRO/EUR |
| Bithumb | South Korea | ZRO/KRW |
| Uniswap, Aerodrome, PancakeSwap and others | Anyone with a wallet | Pools on Arbitrum, Base, Ethereum, BNB Chain and more |
Signing up, verifying identity and depositing work as they do for any coin, and the how-to-buy-crypto guide walks through those basics. Once funded, choose a market order for speed or a limit order to control the price; on the big USDT and USD books the difference is small for ordinary amounts, while limit orders help on thinner local-currency pairs.
The decentralized route suits people who already hold ETH or stablecoins on an L2. Pools on Arbitrum and Base charge low gas, but check the price impact before confirming, and add ZRO to your wallet only with the contract address shown on LayerZero’s official channels or a verified block explorer page. Fake tokens borrowing the ZRO name exist.
One token, many chains: picking a withdrawal network
ZRO uses LayerZero’s Omnichain Fungible Token (OFT) standard. Rather than a “real” token on one chain and wrapped IOUs elsewhere, the supply is shared: moving ZRO from one chain to another removes it on the source chain and creates it on the destination, so the total never changes. On the EVM chains CoinGecko tracks, ZRO also sits at the same contract address, which is unusual and handy, but it means the address alone will not tell you which chain you are on.
| Network | Gas token you need | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereum | ETH | Long-term holding, custody services that only support mainnet; highest gas |
| Arbitrum | ETH | Low fees and deep ZRO pools on Uniswap and Camelot |
| Base | ETH | Low fees; active ZRO liquidity on Aerodrome |
| Optimism | ETH | If your other assets already live on OP Mainnet |
| BNB Chain | BNB | If you mainly use BNB Chain apps or wallets |
| Polygon, Avalanche | POL, AVAX | Only if your activity is already there |
A simple way to decide
- Just holding: pick the network your wallet or hardware device handles comfortably and that your exchange supports for deposits too, so you can send it back later without bridging. Arbitrum or Base keep later transfers cheap.
- Using it in DeFi: withdraw directly to the chain where the app lives. Withdrawing to Ethereum and bridging afterwards adds two extra fees.
- Sending it to another exchange: check that exchange’s deposit page and match the network exactly. Same address, wrong chain is the most common ZRO mistake.
Whatever you choose, keep a little of that chain’s gas token in the wallet. An Arbitrum wallet holding only ZRO cannot move it without some ETH on Arbitrum. You can see Arbitrum’s design trade-offs in our Arbitrum guide.
Moving ZRO between chains later
If you need ZRO on a different chain, apps built on LayerZero (including the Stargate bridge, which the LayerZero Foundation took over in 2025) can transfer it natively. You pay gas on the source chain plus a LayerZero messaging fee, quoted before you confirm. Our crypto bridging explainer covers the risks that come with any cross-chain transfer. LayerZero is one of several messaging designs; Wormhole, for comparison, relies on a fixed set of guardian validators rather than application-chosen verifiers.
Confirming the tokens arrived
After a withdrawal, the exchange shows a transaction hash. Paste it into the block explorer for the network you chose (Etherscan, Arbiscan, Basescan and so on) rather than a generic search. If the explorer shows the transfer as successful but your wallet shows nothing, the usual cause is that the wallet is set to a different network. Switch networks in the wallet first; if the token still does not appear, import it using the official contract address. Only contact exchange support once you have checked both.
ZRO fee switch and unlocks
Two things in ZRO’s design shape supply and demand after you buy, and both are often misreported.
The fee switch votes
LayerZero can charge a protocol fee on each cross-chain message, with the proceeds used to buy and burn ZRO. Turning it on requires a holder referendum, held roughly every six months. The LayerZero Foundation’s records show the first vote (20–27 December 2024) failed: about 11% of eligible ZRO took part against a 60% quorum, even though 96% of votes cast were in favour. Data aggregators such as DefiLlama record that the June 2025 round also left the fee off. A December 2025 referendum also failed to reach quorum, according to reporting at the time, and the fee stayed off. A fourth referendum ran from 20 to 27 June 2026 with a lower quorum of 30.85%; we could not confirm its result, so check the Foundation’s site for the current status before relying on any claim that fees are being burned.
Separately, LayerZero said in June 2026 that all Stargate revenue had been directed to open-market ZRO buybacks from April 2026, alongside a 50 million ZRO Foundation repurchase from strategic partners in September 2025. Those are company-reported figures.
Unlocks
At launch, strategic partners and core contributors faced a one-year lock followed by monthly releases over two years, which places the end of those schedules around mid-2027. LayerZero’s June 2026 update put the gross monthly strategic-partner unlock at about 12.7 million ZRO after the buyback, said contributor schedules vary by joining terms, and said the Foundation’s remaining 183 million ZRO were re-locked until its planned Zero blockchain reaches mainnet. Unlock trackers such as Tokenomist and DefiLlama show upcoming dates.
History: how the original airdrop worked
The first ZRO distribution in June 2024 asked eligible users to “prove” their claim with a small donation, sent to Protocol Guild (an Ethereum core-developer fund), with the Foundation matching up to $10 million. Before that, LayerZero ran a sybil self-reporting window and a public bounty to flag farming wallets. The claim closed on 20 September 2024. Any site offering a “ZRO claim” today is not official.
FAQ
Which network should I use for ZRO?
Use the chain where you will hold or use it, and one your exchange supports for deposits too. Arbitrum and Base have low fees and active ZRO pools; Ethereum suits long-term holders with mainnet-only custody but costs more to move. Keep that chain’s gas token in your wallet, and send a small test first.
Where to buy LayerZero in the US?
As of October 2026, Coinbase, Kraken and Crypto.com listed ZRO against the US dollar in CoinGecko’s data on 26 October 2026. Binance.US did not show a ZRO market. State availability varies, so confirm in the app, and check which networks the platform offers for ZRO withdrawals before you buy.
Can I still claim the ZRO airdrop?
No. The original ZRO claim ran from 20 June to 20 September 2024 and required a donation to Protocol Guild. It has closed. Links, messages or ads promising a new ZRO claim or “eligibility check” are a common wallet-draining scam; never connect a wallet to them.
Does it matter which chain ZRO is on if the address is the same?
Yes. The 0x address is identical across EVM chains, but the tokens exist on only one chain at a time. If you withdraw on Base and your destination watches only Arbitrum, the transfer succeeds yet the tokens are invisible there. You would need to switch networks in your wallet, or move them back across chains.
