How to Stake HYPE on Hyperliquid: Validators and kHYPE

How to Stake HYPE on Hyperliquid: Validators and kHYPE

How to stake HYPE natively: open the Staking page in the Hyperliquid app, transfer HYPE from your spot balance to your staking balance (instant), then delegate it to one or more validators. Each delegation is locked for one day. After that you can undelegate whenever you like, but moving HYPE from the staking balance back to spot goes through a 7-day queue. Rewards accrue every minute, are paid daily and compound automatically. If you want HYPE that stays usable in DeFi while it earns, liquid staking tokens such as Kinetiq’s kHYPE are the alternative.

Key takeaways

  • Hyperliquid uses two internal balances: spot and staking. Delegation happens from the staking balance.
  • Delegations have a 1-day lockup; staking-to-spot transfers wait 7 days, with at most 5 pending per address.
  • The reward rate falls as more HYPE is staked; Hyperliquid’s docs give about 2.37% a year at 400 million HYPE staked.
  • There is no automatic slashing today, but a jailed validator earns nothing for its delegators.
  • Staking HYPE also cuts trading fees, from 5% off with more than 10 HYPE to 40% off above 500,000 HYPE.

Hyperliquid staking: how the balances fit together

Most chains stake from a wallet balance. Hyperliquid’s HyperCore layer instead keeps separate ledgers inside your account, and understanding the flow avoids most confusion about “where my HYPE went.”

Move Timing What it means
Spot → staking balance Instant HYPE is earmarked for staking but not yet earning
Staking balance → validator (delegate) Instant; then 1-day lockup Starts earning; cannot be moved off that validator for a day
Validator → staking balance (undelegate) Instant after the lockup Stops earning; free to delegate elsewhere at once
Staking balance → spot 7-day unstaking queue Only after this can you sell, transfer or trade the HYPE

The practical upshot: switching validators costs you at most a day, but cashing out costs a week. If HYPE is not yet in your Hyperliquid account, our guide to bridging to Hyperliquid explains how to get funds onto the chain; HYPE bought on the platform lands in your spot balance.

How to stake HYPE natively, step by step

  1. Connect. Open the official Hyperliquid app and connect the wallet that controls your account.
  2. Go to Staking. Use the Staking page from the app’s navigation. It shows your spot HYPE, staking balance, current delegations and pending withdrawals.
  3. Transfer to staking. Choose the transfer option, move the amount you want from spot to staking, and sign. This is instant.
  4. Pick a validator. Browse the validator table (see criteria below) and select one.
  5. Delegate. Enter an amount from your staking balance and confirm. The 1-day lock starts now.
  6. Optional: split stake. Repeat for other validators. Hyperliquid’s protocol supports delegating to several validators from one address, which spreads jailing risk.

Unstake HYPE: the 7-day path

To exit, first undelegate from each validator (possible once the 1-day lock has passed), which returns HYPE to your staking balance immediately. Then request a transfer from staking to spot. That request enters a 7-day queue, after which the HYPE appears in spot. Each address can have at most five withdrawals pending at once, so batch your requests rather than making many small ones.

If you do not hold HYPE yet, our guide on buying HYPE on exchanges or HyperCore explains both routes before you stake.

Example: from spot to spot again

Say you move 500 HYPE to staking and delegate it on Monday. Rewards begin from the next epoch and compound daily. On Tuesday the 1-day lock ends; you can now undelegate or switch validators instantly. If you decide to sell the following Friday, undelegate first (instant), then request the staking-to-spot transfer. That HYPE reaches your spot balance the next Friday, seven days later, and stops earning the moment you undelegate. In practice a full round trip takes at least eight days, so do not stake HYPE you may need for margin.

Choosing among Hyperliquid validators

A validator needs 10,000 HYPE of its own stake, locked for a year, to be active. Beyond that floor, look at:

  • Commission. The cut a validator takes from delegator rewards. Hyperliquid limits increases: a validator can only raise its commission if the new rate is 1% or lower, which protects delegators from sudden hikes on validators already above that level.
  • Jailing history. Validators vote to jail peers that respond too slowly or too rarely. A jailed validator stops participating and produces no rewards for its delegators until it unjails, so repeated jailing is a red flag.
  • Stake concentration. The validator set changes in epochs of about 90 minutes, and consensus needs more than two-thirds of stake. Spreading delegations beyond the very largest validators supports decentralization.
  • Self-stake and reputation. Teams with a public track record and meaningful self-stake have more to lose from bad behavior.

HYPE staking rewards: how they are calculated

Hyperliquid sets the reward rate inversely proportional to the square root of total HYPE staked, an approach modeled on Ethereum. The more HYPE that is staked network-wide, the lower the rate for each staker. The docs give one reference point: about 2.37% per year when 400 million HYPE is staked. Rewards are funded from the future emissions reserve, accrue every minute, are distributed daily and are automatically redelegated to the same validator, so they compound without action. They are calculated on your minimum staked balance during each epoch, so HYPE delegated midway through an epoch starts counting from the next one.

Your net rate is the network rate minus your validator’s commission. Check the live figure on the staking page; it moves as total stake changes.

Staking HYPE for trading fee discounts

Staked HYPE also lowers your trading fees. The discount multiplies on top of volume-based fee tiers.

Tier HYPE staked Fee discount
Wood More than 10 5%
Bronze More than 100 10%
Silver More than 1,000 15%
Gold More than 10,000 20%
Platinum More than 100,000 30%
Diamond More than 500,000 40%

You can link a staking account to a separate trading account so its stake counts toward that account’s discount. Linking is permanent and gives the staking address control over the trading account, so only link addresses you fully own. Tier thresholds come from Hyperliquid’s fee documentation; confirm them there before planning around a tier.

kHYPE and other HYPE liquid staking tokens

Liquid staking protocols on HyperEVM accept HYPE, delegate it across validators and give you a token back. Kinetiq’s kHYPE has been the largest by deposits; stHYPE, now run by Valantis after it acquired the StakedHYPE platform in August 2025, is another established option. The tokens can be used as collateral in HyperEVM lending markets, paired in liquidity pools, or swapped back to HYPE on DEXs. Kinetiq’s fee model changed in April 2026 to a 10% performance fee on rewards, according to DefiLlama’s records; read the protocol’s current docs for exact fees and redemption timing, since direct redemption still follows Hyperliquid’s unstaking queue.

Native staking vs kHYPE

Factor Native delegation Liquid staking (kHYPE, stHYPE)
Custody Your Hyperliquid account Protocol contracts on HyperEVM; you hold the token
Exit Undelegate, then 7-day staking-to-spot queue Swap on a DEX now, or redeem through the protocol queue
Validator choice Yours The protocol’s
Fee discount tiers Counts toward tiers Generally does not count, since the protocol holds the stake
DeFi use None Collateral, liquidity, yield strategies
Extra risk Validator jailing Contract bugs, depeg, protocol governance

Risks before you stake HYPE

  • Lockups in volatile markets: Seven days is a long time for a token that can move sharply. Stake only what you would hold anyway.
  • Slashing could arrive: There is no automatic slashing today, but the docs reserve it for provably malicious behavior such as double-signing.
  • Validator concentration: A small validator set means a few operators carry significant weight in consensus.
  • Points and airdrop assumptions: Staking or holding LSTs has been linked to incentive programs, but nothing guarantees future rewards; see our explainer on Hyperliquid points.

FAQ

How do I stake Hyperliquid HYPE?

In the Hyperliquid app, open Staking, transfer HYPE from spot to your staking balance, choose a validator and delegate. The delegation earns rewards that compound daily and is locked for one day. Alternatively, deposit HYPE with a liquid staking protocol on HyperEVM such as Kinetiq to receive kHYPE, which you can use in DeFi while it earns.

Why does it take 7 days to unstake HYPE?

Hyperliquid applies a 7-day queue to transfers from the staking balance back to spot. Undelegating from a validator is instant once the 1-day lock ends, but the HYPE stays in your staking balance until the queue clears. Each address can have up to five pending withdrawals. Selling a liquid staking token is the faster, market-priced alternative.

What are HYPE staking rewards?

The network rate depends on how much HYPE is staked in total, falling as stake grows. Hyperliquid’s documentation cites roughly 2.37% a year at 400 million HYPE staked. Your validator’s commission comes out of that. Rewards accrue each minute, are paid daily and compound automatically; check the staking page for the current rate.

What is kHYPE?

kHYPE is Kinetiq’s liquid staking token on Hyperliquid. You deposit HYPE, Kinetiq delegates it across validators, and kHYPE tracks your share plus accrued rewards. It can be traded or used as collateral on HyperEVM, but it adds smart-contract and depeg risk, and stake held through it does not usually count toward your trading fee discount.
