Solflare Wallet Review: Solana-Only Design, Shield and Fees

Last updated: October 2026

Solflare wallet is a free, self-custody wallet that supports one blockchain, Solana, and has done so since it launched in 2020. That narrow focus is either its main strength or its main limitation, depending on what you hold. If everything you own is SOL, SPL tokens and Solana NFTs, a specialist wallet can go deeper on that chain’s details. If you also hold ETH or Bitcoin, you will need a second wallet. This review checks Solflare against a Solana-specific checklist, using its help centre, launch announcements and third-party audits as of October 2026. It is a documentation-based review; the wallet was not installed or used for it.

Key takeaways

  • Solflare is non-custodial: you hold a standard recovery phrase, and the app runs on iOS, Android, a browser extension and a web app.
  • The app has no secure element of its own. For hardware signing, it pairs with Ledger, Keystone and Solflare’s own Shield card.
  • Solflare Shield, unveiled on 4 December 2025, is a battery-free NFC card with a secure chip. Its help centre listed it from $49 (Origin, limited-time price) to $79 (Unique, standard price) in October 2026.
  • Private Send, launched in March 2026 and powered by Houdini Swap, hides the direct sender-to-recipient link but not the amount, and it relies on third-party routing.
  • Solflare does not publish one fixed swap fee rate. The quote shows the cost before you approve.
  • Solflare says it has more than 4 million users (store listing claim, unverified). No dedicated keyword data exists for the brand, so demand is unmeasured.

Why the Solflare wallet only supports Solana

Most popular wallets have spread across many chains. Phantom, Solflare’s nearest rival, now covers Ethereum, Base, Polygon and Bitcoin as well as Solana. Solflare has stayed with one network. The trade-offs are concrete:

  • What you gain: one key type (Ed25519), one address format, and a smaller codebase to secure. Features can be built for Solana specifics, such as stake accounts, priority fees and the newer Token-2022 standard (“token extensions”), which allows transfer fees, frozen accounts and other behaviours that ordinary SPL tokens do not have.
  • What you lose: anything outside Solana. Ethereum, Bitcoin and EVM tokens need a different wallet. If someone sends you an Ethereum token, Solflare cannot show it. Bridged versions of other assets on Solana (wrapped ETH, for example) are SPL tokens and do appear.
  • A risk that is easy to miss: a single-chain wallet’s future is tied to one ecosystem’s activity and to one company’s funding. Because Solflare uses a standard recovery phrase, you can always restore your Solana accounts in another wallet that supports the same derivation path.

Custody, code and recovery

Solflare generates keys on your device and stores them encrypted locally; the company does not hold them. Recovery uses a standard 12- or 24-word phrase. Solflare publishes developer SDKs and its MetaMask Snap code on GitHub. Third-party reviews note that the main wallet app is not fully open source and that no public audit of the core app has been published. The Solana Snap for MetaMask, which Solflare built, was audited by ConsenSys Diligence in August 2023. For a hot wallet, that partial transparency is a factor to weigh rather than a disqualifier.

Solflare vs Phantom: how the two Solana wallets compare

Our full Phantom wallet review covers the rival in detail. The table sticks to differences that affect a Solana-focused user, using each company’s documentation or reported figures as of October 2026.

Criterion Solflare Phantom
Chains Solana only Solana plus Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Bitcoin and others
Hardware signers Ledger, Keystone, Solflare Shield (NFC card) Ledger
Swap fee Not published as a fixed rate; Solflare said about 0.75%–0.8% in September 2024 0.85% on most swaps, per Phantom’s documentation as reported in 2026 reviews
Privacy transfer Private Send via Houdini Swap (opt-in) No equivalent built-in feature found
Extra products MetaMask Solana Snap; card product in the EEA and UK Perpetual futures (region-dependent), multichain portfolio
Recovery Standard Solana recovery phrase Standard recovery phrase; cross-chain

Choose based on criteria rather than reputation. If hardware signing options and Solana-only scope matter most, the table favours Solflare. If you want one app for several chains, it favours Phantom. Neither wallet has a confirmed exploit of its own code in the period covered here.

Solflare Shield: the NFC card signer

Shield is Solflare’s own hardware wallet, unveiled at Solana Breakpoint on 4 December 2025. It is a flat card containing a secure chip, with no screen, battery, cable or Bluetooth. To sign, you tap the card on your phone through NFC and confirm with your PIN or biometrics in the Solflare mobile app. Solflare’s help centre says the keys never leave the card. A stolen phone cannot sign without the card, and a stolen card locks after several wrong PIN attempts. Launch coverage described the chip as EAL6+ certified, and Solflare advertised a 25-year warranty.

Shield edition (Solflare help centre, October 2026) Listed price
Origin $49 limited-time (standard $69)
Signature (artist designs) $59
Unique $59 limited-time (standard $79)

The weakness is the missing screen. A hardware wallet with a display lets you check the destination address on a device that malware cannot touch. With Shield, the phone shows what you are signing, so a compromised phone could still display one thing and request another. The card protects the key from extraction but cannot independently confirm the transaction. The box includes recovery phrase sheets, and Solflare’s help articles cover importing an existing phrase into a new card, so a lost card is recoverable only if you kept the phrase. Launch reports gave conflicting shipping dates (December 2025 vs February 2026); check stock in Solflare’s shop before ordering.

Private Send: what it does and doesn’t hide

On Solana, every transfer is public: anyone can see that address A paid address B. Private Send, launched in March 2026 as part of what Solflare calls its Privacy Aggregator Layer, is an opt-in, per-transfer option that routes the payment through intermediary addresses using Houdini Swap. Houdini describes routing through two separate exchange partners, with a random layer-1 chain or Monero in between.

  • Hidden: the direct on-chain link between your address and the recipient’s.
  • Not hidden: the amount, which Solflare’s material says stays visible, and the fact that your wallet sent funds into a privacy route.
  • Trust shifts: you are relying on Houdini and its exchange partners, which can see both sides of the route. One analyst described Houdini as “compliant privacy”, meaning the route can be traced in response to legal requests.
  • Cost and time: the provider’s fee and estimated completion time appear before you confirm. Solflare said it adds no fee of its own at launch, and settlement usually takes minutes.

Use Private Send to keep counterparties from seeing your full balance history, not to evade sanctions or tax reporting. Exchanges may ask where funds came from if they arrive through privacy routes.

Staking from Solflare in brief

Solflare lets you delegate SOL to a validator through a native stake account. The SOL stays in your custody, but it is locked into an account that must be deactivated over an epoch before you can withdraw. Because staking is covered elsewhere on the site, this review does not repeat the steps: see our guides on how to stake Solana and Solana liquid staking. Rewards depend on network conditions and validator performance and are not guaranteed.

Fees, swaps and spam tokens

The Solflare app itself is free. Costs come from three places:

  1. Network fees. Solana charges a base fee per signature plus an optional priority fee during congestion. Solflare’s help centre advises keeping about 0.05 SOL in the wallet so transactions and account rent do not fail.
  2. Swap fees. In-app swaps route through Solana aggregators such as Jupiter. Solflare does not publish one fixed rate; its own account cited roughly 0.75%–0.8% in September 2024, and its terms say swap fees apply. The quote shows the route and the total cost before you sign. Default slippage tolerance is 0.5%, which is a price tolerance, not a fee.
  3. On-ramp fees. Card purchases go through third-party providers that set their own charges by region and payment method.

Is Solflare safe from scam tokens?

Solana’s low fees make it cheap for scammers to send unsolicited tokens and NFTs to millions of addresses. These “airdrops” often carry a website name in the token’s title or image and lead to a drainer page that asks you to sign a transaction handing over your assets. The defence is behavioural: never visit a site named in a token you did not expect, hide or burn spam rather than interact with it, and read the transaction preview before signing anything. Token-2022 assets can also carry transfer fees or freeze authority, so check a token’s details before buying it.

In August 2022, thousands of Solana hot wallets were drained in an incident later linked to another wallet’s handling of keys. Solflare told TechCrunch at the time that it had not been affected. No Solflare-specific exploit of its code was found for 2023 to October 2026. Threat-intelligence feeds did, however, flag several lookalike Solflare domains running drainer kits during 2025 and 2026.

Anti-phishing note: the official domain is solflare.com. Type it yourself or bookmark it, and install the extension or app only from the store links on that site. Ignore search ads, DMs and “support” accounts offering to help with your wallet. No genuine support agent will ever ask for your recovery phrase. FAQ

Is Solflare safe for large balances?

As a hot wallet, Solflare’s keys sit on an internet-connected device, so for larger sums pair it with a Ledger, Keystone or Shield signer. No confirmed exploit of Solflare’s own code was found as of October 2026, but phishing sites imitating it are common.

Solflare vs Phantom: which has lower swap fees?

Phantom’s documented rate is 0.85% on most swaps. Solflare does not publish a fixed rate and last cited about 0.75%–0.8% in 2024. Compare the final quote in each app for the same pair and amount, since routing and slippage can matter more than the headline fee.

Does the Solflare extension work with Ledger?

Yes. Solflare’s documentation describes connecting Ledger and Keystone devices through the web app and browser extension, as well as on mobile. The Shield card works through the mobile app over NFC.

Can Solflare Private Send make me anonymous?

No. Private Send breaks the direct link between sender and recipient, but amounts stay visible and the routing providers can see both ends. Treat it as a way to reduce casual tracking, not as anonymity, and follow your local reporting rules.
