Last Updated: March 2026

Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 built by Coinbase — the largest US crypto exchange. It combines Coinbase’s 100M+ verified user distribution with OP Stack technology, making it one of the fastest-growing L2s in crypto.

History

Announced and launched by Coinbase in 2023. Built on the OP Stack (Optimism’s open-source framework). Notably, Base has no token — Coinbase chose not to launch one, distinguishing it from every other major L2. Despite no token incentive, Base grew explosively through Coinbase’s distribution. See L2 guide and Optimism guide.

Why Base Matters

  • Coinbase distribution: 100M+ verified users can withdraw directly to Base — the largest on-ramp of any L2
  • No token: No speculative token, no airdrop farming — usage driven by genuine need
  • Consumer focus: Social apps (Farcaster/Warpcast), AI agents, and consumer dApps thrive on Base
  • Aerodrome: Base’s dominant DEX. See Aerodrome guide
  • OP Stack: Part of the Optimism Superchain — interoperable with OP Mainnet and Mode

How to Use Base

See our dedicated Base chain guide for step-by-step instructions. Key options:

  • Coinbase withdrawal: Withdraw ETH directly to Base (simplest, no bridging). See exchange guide
  • Bridge: Bridge from Ethereum via official bridge. See bridge guide
  • MetaMask: Add Base network to MetaMask. See MetaMask guide

Base Ecosystem

  • Aerodrome: Dominant DEX. See Aerodrome
  • Uniswap: Available on Base. See Uniswap guide
  • Aave: Lending on Base. See Aave guide
  • BRETT: Base’s largest memecoin. See BRETT guide
  • Farcaster: Decentralized social media hub on Base

Pros and Cons

  • Pro: Coinbase’s 100M+ user base as direct on-ramp

  • Pro: Fastest-growing L2 by new users and transaction count
  • Pro: Part of Optimism Superchain
  • Con: No token means no direct investment in Base itself
  • Con: Centralized sequencer (Coinbase controls)
  • Con: 7-day withdrawal to L1 (optimistic rollup)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I invest in Base?

Base has no token. You can invest indirectly through Coinbase stock (COIN), OP token (Base contributes to the Superchain), or Base ecosystem tokens (AERO, BRETT). See Aerodrome.

Is Base safe?

Base inherits Ethereum’s security via optimistic rollups. Coinbase operates the sequencer. Funds can always be withdrawn to L1. See security guide.
