What Is Convex Finance (CVX)? Curve Yield Booster

Last Updated: March 2026

Convex Finance lets you earn boosted Curve yields without locking CRV tokens yourself. It aggregates CRV voting power to boost rewards for Curve LPs, while CVX holders control where Curve emissions go.

History

Launched in 2021 by a pseudonymous team. Convex quickly accumulated the largest share of veCRV (locked CRV tokens), making it the kingmaker in the “Curve Wars” — the battle between protocols for Curve liquidity. See Curve guide.

How Convex Works

  1. CRV holders lock CRV into Convex (permanently) and receive cvxCRV
  2. Convex uses its massive veCRV position to boost yields for all Curve LPs
  3. Curve LPs deposit LP tokens on Convex instead of Curve — earn boosted rewards without locking CRV themselves
  4. vlCVX (vote-locked CVX) holders control where Convex directs Curve emissions

See Curve guide and yield farming.

Tokenomics

CVX: 100M max supply. vlCVX: Lock CVX for 16 weeks to vote on Curve gauge weights. Revenue: Convex earns fees from boosted Curve yields. See tokenomics.

Pros and Cons

  • Pro: Controls the most veCRV — the Curve kingmaker
  • Pro: Boosted yields without CRV lock-up complexity
  • Pro: Protocols bribe vlCVX holders for emissions (real revenue)
  • Con: Entirely dependent on Curve’s relevance
  • Con: Complex Curve/Convex relationship confuses new users
  • Con: If Curve loses market share, Convex’s value diminishes

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Convex safe to use?

Convex has been audited but all DeFi carries smart contract risk. Use established protocols and start with small amounts.

Is Convex a good investment?

Evaluate based on real revenue, TVL growth, and token utility. Best as a small DeFi allocation alongside BTC and ETH.

How do I use Convex?

Connect a Web3 wallet (MetaMask or Phantom) to the protocol’s website. Start with small amounts to learn the mechanics.
