Here’s how to buy Zcash and actually use its privacy. Mainstream exchanges sell ZEC, but most send it to you as transparent, fully visible coins. Shielding it is a step you do yourself afterwards. As of October 2026, US buyers can find ZEC on Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Robinhood and Binance.US. Binance and OKX carry it internationally, and OKX relisted it in November 2025. After you buy, withdraw to a wallet such as Zodl (formerly Zashi) and move the coins into the shielded pool. The July 2026 Ironwood upgrade changed which pool that is.
Key takeaways
- Zcash privacy is optional. That’s the main reason exchanges kept ZEC when they dropped Monero.
- Most exchanges withdraw to transparent (t1…) addresses. Gemini has supported shielded and unified-address withdrawals.
- Unified addresses (u1…) are the current standard. The Ironwood upgrade (28 July 2026) replaced the Orchard pool with a new shielded pool, and existing unified addresses keep working.
- The Zashi wallet is now called Zodl. It’s run by the team that left the Electric Coin Company in January 2026.
- Grayscale’s Zcash ETF (ZCSH) began trading on NYSE Arca on 25 August 2026.
Why Zcash is still listed when Monero isn’t
Monero hides every transaction by default. Zcash lets users choose. ZEC can sit in transparent addresses that work like Bitcoin’s, or in shielded pools that encrypt sender, receiver and amount. Shielded users can also share viewing keys with an auditor or tax preparer. That choice gives a regulated exchange room to work with: it can deposit and withdraw only through transparent addresses, keep its compliance tools working, and leave shielding to the customer. Monero offers no such option. Our Monero guide explains that design, and the privacy coins overview compares the two side by side.
That doesn’t make ZEC safe from delisting. OKX dropped it in January 2024 before listing it again in late 2025. Japanese and South Korean exchanges removed privacy coins years ago. In April 2025, ZEC drew one of the highest vote counts in Binance’s first “Vote to Delist” round, but it remained listed. For background on how Zcash’s cryptography works, see our Zcash explainer.
How to buy Zcash: exchanges that sell ZEC in October 2026
We checked each platform’s own public market data in October 2026. Because shielding is the point of this guide, the useful question to ask an exchange is what kind of address it will send to.
For a sense of how wide the outcomes are, read our Zcash price prediction, which turns market-cap assumptions into price ranges instead of a single target.
| Exchange | Region | ZEC markets | Withdrawal address type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini | US and international | ZEC/USD | Has supported shielded and unified-address withdrawals. Confirm on the withdrawal screen. |
| Coinbase | US and international | ZEC-USD (some older pairs retired) | Historically transparent only. Check current support. |
| Kraken | US (state limits) and international | ZEC/USD, ZEC/EUR | Treat as transparent unless Kraken’s page says otherwise. |
| Robinhood | US | ZEC listed, no state exclusion noted | Check the transfer options in the app. |
| Binance.US | US (not all states) | ZEC/USD, ZEC/USDT | Transparent. |
| Binance | Outside the US | ZEC/USDT, ZEC/USDC, ZEC/BTC and others | Transparent. |
| OKX | Outside the US (OKX runs a separate US platform) | ZEC/USDT since 24 November 2025, with EUR and USDC pairs added in February 2026 | Transparent. |
| KuCoin, Gate, MEXC, Bitget, Bitfinex | Mostly offshore; none serves US customers | Listed | Check per exchange. |
Selection criteria we’d use: availability where you live, whether shielded withdrawals are supported, and the total cost including spread. Note that Crypto.com’s exchange didn’t list a ZEC market in our October 2026 check.
Zcash shielded addresses explained: transparent, Sapling and unified
| Type | Prefix | Visible on-chain? | Where you’ll meet it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transparent | t1… (or t3… for scripts) | Yes: sender, receiver and amount, like Bitcoin | Most exchange deposit and withdrawal pages |
| Sapling | zs1… | No | Older shielded wallets. Still valid. |
| Unified address | u1… | Depends on which receiver the sender uses | Modern wallets such as Zodl. Bundles several receiver types in one string. |
A unified address packs a transparent receiver, a Sapling receiver and a newer shielded receiver into a single address. The sending wallet picks the most private receiver it supports. That’s why an exchange that “supports unified addresses” may still send to the transparent part of the address.
What Ironwood changed. In late May 2026, a researcher reported a critical flaw in the circuit used by the Orchard shielded pool that could, in theory, have allowed undetectable counterfeit ZEC. Developers patched it through an emergency soft fork and hard fork in early June. They said they found no evidence of exploitation but couldn’t rule it out cryptographically. The Ironwood network upgrade activated on 28 July 2026 at block 3,428,143. It introduced a new shielded pool and sealed Orchard behind a “turnstile” that lets out no more ZEC than verifiably went in. According to the Zodl team, Ironwood reuses each user’s existing Orchard receiver, so previously issued unified addresses keep working.
Shielding your ZEC after you buy it
The usual workflow from a mainstream exchange:
- Install a shielded wallet. Zodl is the renamed Zashi wallet, maintained by the former Electric Coin Company team after their January 2026 departure. YWallet and Zingo are other options. Make sure your wallet version supports Ironwood.
- Withdraw from the exchange to the address your wallet gives you. If the exchange accepts only transparent addresses, use the wallet’s transparent receiving address.
- Shield. Zodl and similar wallets prompt you to move, or “auto-shield”, transparent funds into the shielded pool. If your wallet still has funds in the sealed Orchard pool, it should offer a migration through the turnstile.
- Wait before spending. A withdrawal of exactly 3.217 ZEC followed minutes later by a shielded spend of 3.217 ZEC is easy to link. Leaving time and varying amounts reduces that correlation. Network-level metadata matters too: the Nym project warned that migrating without network protection can link your IP address to your balance.
Fees. Zcash uses a proportional fee rule (ZIP-317): 5,000 zatoshis per “logical action”, with a two-action minimum. Ordinary transfers cost a tiny fraction of a ZEC, while transactions with many inputs cost more. Exchanges charge their own flat withdrawal fee on top. Check it before you confirm.
Timing and selling later. Zcash produces a block roughly every 75 seconds, and exchanges wait for a set number of confirmations before crediting a deposit. Plan on tens of minutes rather than seconds. When you eventually sell, the exchange will give you a transparent deposit address. Your wallet moves the funds out of the shielded pool for that transaction, and the amount becomes visible on-chain from that point. Some platforms don’t accept deposits sent straight from a shielded address, so read the deposit notes first. This step is normal. It’s why exchanges can list ZEC at all.
Hardware wallets. Ledger’s Zcash support has historically been limited to transparent addresses. If you need shielded funds on hardware, check the current device and wallet documentation before relying on it.
Zcash funds, ETFs and regional restrictions
- ETF: The Grayscale Zcash Trust converted into an exchange-traded product. Its registration became effective on 24 August 2026, and ZCSH began trading on NYSE Arca the next day. It isn’t a 1940 Act fund, and holding shares doesn’t give you ZEC you can shield or spend.
- European Union: From 10 July 2027, the Anti-Money Laundering Regulation stops EU crypto-asset service providers from handling anonymity-enhancing coins. Whether optional-privacy ZEC is treated like Monero will depend on supervisors’ guidance. EU platforms may decide to drop it rather than wait. Our EU crypto regulation guide follows the rollout.
- Japan and South Korea: Licensed exchanges don’t offer ZEC.
- Cross-chain intents: Some multichain intent systems, including NEAR Intents, can route other assets into ZEC. They carry their own smart-contract and counterparty risks.
Shielding is legal. Using it to evade sanctions, tax or a platform’s legal checks is not. Taxes apply to ZEC exactly as to any other crypto. This isn’t legal or tax advice. For guides to other coins, see our how to buy crypto hub.
FAQ
Can I buy Zcash on Coinbase?
Yes. As of October 2026, Coinbase lists ZEC with a ZEC-USD market, although it retired some older ZEC pairs. Kraken, Gemini, Robinhood and Binance.US also list ZEC for US customers. Coinbase has historically withdrawn ZEC to transparent addresses only, so plan to shield the coins in your own wallet afterwards.
What is a Zcash shielded address?
A shielded address receives ZEC into an encrypted pool where sender, receiver and amount aren’t publicly visible. Sapling addresses start with zs1. Unified addresses start with u1 and bundle a shielded receiver with other types. Transparent t1 addresses aren’t shielded. Since July 2026, new shielded funds go to the Ironwood pool.
What happened to the Zashi wallet?
In January 2026, the Electric Coin Company team that built Zashi left after a dispute with its parent organisation’s board and formed a new company. The wallet now ships as Zodl. The Zodl team says it is the same wallet renamed, and its download links point to the former Zashi app listings. The team said it would update the wallet for the Ironwood pool introduced in July 2026, so keep the app updated.
Will Zcash be banned in the EU?
Owning ZEC won’t be banned by the EU’s new AML rules. From 10 July 2027, regulated crypto providers in the EU may not handle anonymity-enhancing coins. ZEC’s optional privacy could lead to different treatment from Monero, but that depends on supervisors, so expect EU exchanges to review their listings. This isn’t legal advice.
