You’ve seen headlines about billions of tokens being “burned”—but what is a token burn and how does it affect price? This guide explains burn mechanics, why projects burn tokens, and what it means for investors.

What Is Token Burning?

Token burning permanently removes tokens from circulation by sending them to an inaccessible wallet address (a “burn address”). Once burned, tokens can never be recovered or used again. This reduces the total supply, creating deflationary pressure.

How Burns Affect Price

Basic economics: if demand stays the same but supply decreases, price should increase. Burns work like stock buybacks—reducing the number of units outstanding increases each remaining unit’s share of the total value.

The most famous example: Ethereum’s EIP-1559 burns a portion of every transaction fee. During high-activity periods, more ETH is burned than created, making ETH deflationary. See ETH analysis.

Types of Burns

  • Automatic/protocol burns: Built into the protocol (Ethereum’s fee burning). Happens with every transaction
  • Scheduled burns: Regular burns at set intervals (Binance quarterly BNB burns)
  • One-time burns: Project burns a large portion of supply for tokenomics improvement
  • Community burns: Token holders voluntarily send tokens to burn addresses

Notable Token Burns

  • Ethereum (EIP-1559): Millions of ETH burned since implementation. Can make ETH net deflationary
  • BNB: Binance burns BNB quarterly until supply reaches 100M (from original 200M)
  • SHIB: Community-driven burns to reduce massive supply. See memecoin guide

When Burns Matter (and Don’t)

Burns matter when: They significantly reduce supply relative to market cap, and demand exists independently of the burn narrative

Burns are marketing when: The burn is tiny relative to total supply, or the token has no real utility beyond the burn narrative. A project burning 0.001% of supply monthly is essentially meaningless.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does burning tokens increase price?

In theory yes. In practice, burns must be significant relative to total supply to impact price.

Are token burns permanent?

Yes — burned tokens are sent to an inaccessible address and can never be recovered.

Which cryptos burn tokens?

Ethereum (EIP-1559), BNB (quarterly), SHIB (community), Injective (weekly), and many others.
