BNB (formerly Binance Coin) is the native token of the BNB Chain ecosystem and the Binance exchange. Originally launched as an ERC-20 token in 2017, BNB has evolved into the fuel for an entire blockchain ecosystem with one of the largest market caps in crypto.

History and Founders

BNB was created by Changpeng Zhao (CZ) and the Binance team through an ICO in July 2017, raising $15 million. Initially used for trading fee discounts on Binance, it migrated to its own blockchain. BNB Smart Chain (BSC) launched in 2020, and its low fees attracted massive DeFi adoption. CZ stepped down as CEO in 2023 following regulatory settlements.

How BNB Works

BNB Chain uses Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) with 21 active validators. This makes it fast (sub-second finality) and cheap (fractions of a cent per transaction) but more centralized than Ethereum or Solana. BNB Chain is EVM-compatible. See PoS guide.

Tokenomics

Max supply: 200 million (originally). Binance burns BNB quarterly until supply reaches 100 million. See burn guide. Current supply: ~145-150 million. Utility: Gas fees, trading fee discounts (25% off), Launchpad participation, staking.

See tokenomics guide and market cap guide.

Use Cases

  • Exchange utility: Fee discounts and Launchpad access on Binance. See Coinbase vs Binance
  • DeFi: PancakeSwap, Venus, and hundreds of dApps on BNB Chain
  • Payments: Binance Pay merchant acceptance
  • Cross-chain: Bridges to Ethereum and other chains. See bridging guide

Pros and Cons

  • Regular token burns reduce supply
  • Low transaction fees and EVM-compatible
  • Strong DeFi ecosystem

Cons

  • Centralized (21 validators, Binance-controlled)
  • Regulatory risk from Binance’s global challenges
  • Less decentralized than Ethereum or Solana
  • CZ’s legal issues created uncertainty

How to Buy BNB

BNB is available on Binance and most major exchanges. See exchange guide and wallet guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BNB a good investment?

BNB is coupled with Binance’s success. If Binance remains the dominant exchange, BNB benefits from burns, utility demand, and ecosystem growth. Centralization and regulatory risks are the main concerns. See altcoin guide.

Will BNB reach $1,000?

Possible in a strong bull market given its burn mechanism and utility demand, but depends on Binance’s regulatory standing and ecosystem growth.

Can I stake BNB?

Yes — BNB can be staked on BNB Chain for validator rewards, or through Binance staking products for simpler earning.
