Getting CRV is the easy step. Coinbase, Kraken, Bitstamp and Crypto.com Exchange quote it in US dollars, and Binance, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin and Upbit trade it worldwide. The harder question in how to buy curve is what to do afterwards. You can leave CRV liquid. You can lock it for up to four years as non-transferable veCRV to vote and earn a share of protocol fees. Or you can hand it to a liquid locker such as Convex. Each option trades liquidity against influence, and once you lock, the decision can’t be reversed.
Key takeaways
- CRV is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Locking it into veCRV happens on Ethereum mainnet, so withdraw on the Ethereum network if you plan to lock.
- US venues with CRV/USD markets as of 26 October 2026: Coinbase, Kraken, Bitstamp and Crypto.com Exchange. Global venues include Binance, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin, Bitget, Gate and Upbit.
- veCRV locks run from one week to four years. You cannot withdraw before the lock expires, and the balance cannot be transferred.
- Liquid lockers (cvxCRV, yCRV, sdCRV) turn CRV into a tradable token permanently. Curve’s own blog recorded these tokens trading at 50–70% of CRV’s value in late 2024.
- CoinGecko put CRV’s market cap near $538 million on 26 October 2026, with about 1.58 billion CRV circulating out of a 3.03 billion maximum.
How to buy Curve (CRV) in October 2026
If you need the background on what Curve is (the stableswap AMM, gauges and the Curve Wars), read our Curve profile first. The table shows where CoinGecko listed active CRV markets on 26 October 2026.
| Where | CRV markets | US customers | Note for would-be lockers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | CRV/USD, CRV/EUR, CRV/GBP | Yes | Check the network in the withdrawal menu. Pick Ethereum for veCRV. |
| Kraken | CRV/USD, CRV/EUR | Yes, most states | Kraken Pro gives limit orders. |
| Bitstamp (Robinhood-owned) | CRV/USD | Yes, state rules apply | A smaller book than Coinbase. |
| Crypto.com Exchange | CRV/USD, CRV/USDT | Varies by region | Confirm in your own account. |
| Binance, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin, Bitget, Gate, MEXC | CRV/USDT, CRV/USDC | No | Deepest global order books. |
| Upbit, Bithumb | CRV/KRW | No | Korean won markets. |
| Curve, Uniswap (Ethereum and L2s) | CRV against ETH, crvUSD and others | Self-custody | Pay gas in ETH. You must already hold crypto in a wallet. |
Our how to buy crypto hub covers funding methods (bank, card, stablecoin). Swapping on Curve itself is a separate skill, explained step by step in how to use Curve Finance. Swapping is not required here, because a centralized exchange plus a withdrawal reaches the same result.
A practical point about withdrawals: CRV also exists on Arbitrum, Base, Optimism and other networks. Some exchanges offer those cheaper withdrawal routes. That is fine if you only want to hold or trade. The voting-escrow contract that creates veCRV lives on Ethereum mainnet, though. If CRV lands on an L2, you will have to bridge it back before you can lock. Mainnet gas is the price of locking, so add it to your costs.
CRV, veCRV and crvUSD: three tokens buyers mix up
Search results and exchange menus put these names side by side, and they are easy to confuse. Only one of them is sold on exchanges as “Curve”.
| CRV | veCRV | crvUSD | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Curve DAO’s governance and reward token | Locked CRV, a non-transferable balance inside the voting-escrow contract | Curve’s over-collateralized stablecoin, designed to track $1 |
| Can you buy it on an exchange? | Yes | No. You create it by locking CRV. | On Curve and some DEXs. A few centralized exchanges list it. |
| Transferable? | Yes | No, it stays in the locking wallet | Yes |
| What holding it does | Nothing on its own. You get price exposure. | Gauge votes, DAO votes, a fee share and up to 2.5x boost on your own CRV liquidity rewards | Lets you borrow or save in dollars. It is not an investment in Curve’s growth. |
| Exit | Sell anytime | Only after the lock expires | Swap or repay |
One frequent mistake is buying crvUSD while thinking it is the Curve token. crvUSD is meant to stay near one dollar, so it gives no exposure to CRV at all. Another is assuming veCRV can be bought “pre-locked”. It can’t. Any token offered for sale under the name “veCRV” is not the real escrow balance.
Locking CRV as veCRV: what you gain and what you give up
According to Curve’s documentation, you can lock CRV for anywhere from one week to four years. A four-year lock gives one veCRV per CRV, and shorter locks give proportionally less. Your veCRV balance falls steadily as the unlock date approaches, unless you extend the lock. Since a DAO vote in May 2025, any wallet, multisig or smart contract can lock. Before that, contracts needed whitelisting.
What veCRV gives you
- Gauge votes: you help decide which pools and Llamalend markets receive the weekly CRV emissions. This vote is the reason protocols compete for veCRV.
- A fee share: part of Curve’s DEX and crvUSD-borrowing fees is collected, converted to crvUSD and distributed weekly to veCRV holders. The amount depends on volume and borrowing activity and is not fixed. Curve’s dashboard shows recent weekly distributions.
- Boost: if you also provide liquidity, veCRV can raise your CRV rewards on that position by up to 2.5x, depending on the pool.
- DAO votes: on parameter and ownership proposals, which run for seven days.
What it costs you
- No early exit. Curve’s docs are explicit that locked CRV cannot be withdrawn before expiry, whatever the market does.
- No transfer. veCRV cannot be sold or moved to another wallet. If you lose the wallet’s keys, you lose the lock.
- Active management. The full benefit requires voting, claiming fees and topping up the lock. Small balances can spend a noticeable share of their fee income on Ethereum gas.
A rough rule of thumb follows from those terms. Locking suits holders who expect to keep CRV through the whole lock period anyway and want a say in emissions. If you might need the money within the lock window, staying liquid is the safer default. That is a description of the tradeoff, not a recommendation either way.
Liquid lockers like Convex: the middle path
Liquid lockers pool users’ CRV, lock it permanently as veCRV, and hand back a tradable token. The best known are Convex’s cvxCRV, Yearn’s yCRV and StakeDAO’s sdCRV. Our Convex explainer covers how Convex came to control a large share of veCRV during the Curve Wars.
The appeal is clear: you get a share of veCRV-derived income, with no end date to track, and a token you can sell on a Curve pool. The catch is that the conversion only works one way. The locker’s CRV is locked for good, so the only way back to CRV is to sell the wrapper on the market. When many people want out at once, the wrapper trades below CRV. In a post on 8 December 2024, Curve wrote that cvxCRV, yCRV and sdCRV had ranged between 80% and 100% of CRV’s value through 2024 before falling to 50–70%. It blamed profit-taking, forced repayments by CRV borrowers and the unwinding of hedged farming positions.
| Choice | Liquidity | Voting control | Main risk beyond CRV’s price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hold CRV | Full | None | Exchange or wallet custody |
| Lock veCRV yourself | None until expiry | Direct | Being stuck through a downturn, plus gas costs |
| Liquid locker (cvxCRV, yCRV, sdCRV) | Through a DEX pool, often at a discount | Delegated to the locker’s governance | A wrapper discount, plus smart-contract and governance risk at the locker |
Before using any locker, compare the live pool price of the wrapper with CRV, read the locker’s current reward terms, and check who controls its contracts. More of the general context on how DeFi protocols stack on each other applies here: every extra layer adds a contract that can fail.
Risks that are specific to CRV
- Concentrated positions: in June 2024, loans backed by founder Michael Egorov’s CRV were liquidated across several lending markets after the price fell. Arkham Intelligence had reported about $141 million of CRV posted as collateral. Egorov said the episode left about $10 million of bad debt on Curve’s lending product, which he said he repaid within days. Large CRV-backed loans can still amplify selling pressure.
- Emissions: new CRV is minted continuously and sent to liquidity gauges, so circulating supply keeps growing toward the 3.03 billion cap.
- Smart-contract history: Curve pools were hit by a compiler-level exploit in July 2023. Locking adds contract exposure on top of exchange custody.
- Governance: large veCRV holders, including lockers and protocols, shape emissions. Small holders have little say.
FAQ
Where to buy Curve DAO token in the US?
As of late October 2026, CoinGecko showed CRV/USD markets on Coinbase, Kraken, Bitstamp and Crypto.com Exchange, all of which accept US users with some state limits. Binance.com, OKX and Bybit list CRV but exclude US residents. Search the asset in your own account, because the trading menu is the final word on availability.
Can I buy CRV directly on Curve?
Yes, if you already have crypto (ETH or a stablecoin) in a self-custody wallet. You can swap into CRV on Curve or Uniswap, paying gas and slippage. Newcomers usually find it simpler to buy CRV on a centralized exchange first and withdraw it on the Ethereum network.
Is veCRV the same as crvUSD?
No. veCRV is locked CRV, used for voting and the fee share, and it cannot be transferred. crvUSD is Curve’s dollar stablecoin. Fee distributions to veCRV holders are currently paid in crvUSD, which is probably where the confusion comes from, but buying crvUSD gives you no CRV exposure.
Can I unlock veCRV early?
No. Curve’s documentation states that locked CRV cannot be withdrawn before the lock expires. The only liquid alternative is a liquid-locker token such as cvxCRV, and converting into one is permanent. You exit by selling it on the market, which may be at a discount to CRV.
