The most expensive ETC mistake isn’t overpaying. It’s sending ETC to an Ethereum (ETH) deposit address, or ETH to an ETC one. The two chains share an address format, so nothing looks wrong until the coins fail to show up. Buying is the easy part: Coinbase, Kraken, Robinhood, Binance and most large exchanges list ETC. This guide covers how to buy ethereum classic and move it without crossing chains, how to add chain ID 61 to MetaMask, why exchange deposits can take hours, and what the Grayscale trust offers.
- ETC spot markets were live on Coinbase, Kraken, Robinhood, Binance.US, Binance, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin, Gate, MEXC, Bitget and HTX as of October 2026.
- ETC and ETH addresses look identical (0x plus 40 hex characters), but the chains are separate: chain ID 61 for Ethereum Classic, 1 for Ethereum.
- ETC is still proof-of-work. After the 2020 51% attacks, exchanges require far more confirmations for ETC than for ETH. Coinbase’s public data listed 3,000 for ETC in October 2026.
- In MetaMask, ETC needs to be added as a custom network. Ledger, Trust Wallet and Exodus support it directly.
- Grayscale Ethereum Classic Trust (ETCG) still traded over the counter in 2026. It has not become an ETF.
ETC vs ETH: same-looking addresses, different chains
Ethereum Classic is the original Ethereum chain that continued after the 2016 DAO-hack fork. The two networks kept the same account model, so an address such as 0x52… is valid on both. Our Ethereum Classic explainer covers that history. For a buyer, three facts matter:
- The same seed phrase controls the same address on both chains. If you send ETC from an exchange to your own MetaMask address that you normally use for ETH, the coins are safe. You just need to switch MetaMask to the ETC network to see them.
- Exchange deposit addresses are a different story. An exchange’s ETH deposit address is monitored only on Ethereum. ETC sent there lands on the ETC chain at an address the exchange controls but doesn’t watch. Recovery is at the exchange’s discretion, may carry a fee, and is sometimes refused.
- Chain IDs stop replays, not typos. Since 2016–17, transactions include a chain ID (61 or 1), so a signed transaction on one chain can’t be replayed on the other. That protects signatures, but it does nothing to stop you pasting the wrong deposit address.
| Mistake | Usual outcome |
|---|---|
| ETC sent to your own self-custody 0x address | Recoverable. Add the ETC network in your wallet. |
| ETC sent to an exchange’s ETH deposit address | Possibly unrecoverable. Contact support immediately. |
| ETH sent to an exchange’s ETC deposit address | Same problem in reverse. |
| ETC withdrawn “on Ethereum” as a token | Not native ETC. Avoid unless you know which wrapped token it is. |
The habit that prevents all of this: on every deposit screen, select Ethereum Classic (ETC) as the network, copy a fresh address from that screen, and send a small test first.
How to buy Ethereum Classic: where to buy ETC
ETC is one of the most widely listed proof-of-work coins. Based on exchange market data and asset pages in late October 2026:
| Platform | ETC markets | US access | Withdrawal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | ETC-USD | Yes | Ethereum Classic network |
| Kraken | ETC/USD, ETC/EUR, ETC/XBT, ETC/ETH | Yes, most states | Native ETC |
| Robinhood | ETC | Yes | Check whether transfers are enabled for your account |
| Binance.US | ETC/USD, ETC/USDT | Eligible states | Native ETC |
| Binance | ETC/USDT, ETC/USDC, ETC/FDUSD, ETC/TRY (ETC/EUR halted) | No | Native ETC |
| OKX, Bybit, KuCoin, Gate, MEXC, Bitget, HTX | Mostly USDT, some USDC | No | Native ETC. HTX is UK-sanctioned (since 26 May 2026) and under an EU transaction ban (since 23 Aug 2026). |
Kraken’s ETC/ETH pair is handy if you already hold ether and want to switch without cashing out. Gemini had no ETC market at the time of writing. Compare platforms on things you can verify: whether they serve your state, the spread on ETC, your trading fees and whether withdrawals are enabled. Adding Ethereum Classic to MetaMask
MetaMask doesn’t list ETC among its default networks, so you add it manually:
- Open MetaMask, go to the network selector and choose Add a custom network.
- Network name: Ethereum Classic. Chain ID: 61. Currency symbol: ETC.
- RPC URL: use a public endpoint published by the Ethereum Classic community’s official documentation or a reputable node provider. MetaMask checks that the endpoint reports chain ID 61, and a mismatch means the URL is wrong.
- Block explorer: add the ETC Blockscout explorer so transaction links work.
- Switch to the new network. Your usual 0x address is now your ETC receiving address.
Be careful with network-adding websites. A malicious RPC can show false balances or log your activity, so only use endpoints from sources you trust. Our MetaMask guide covers custom networks and security settings. If you’d rather avoid manual setup, Ledger (through Ledger Live), Trust Wallet and Exodus support ETC as a native asset, which also reduces the chance of picking the wrong chain.
Confirmations, 51% attacks and deposit times
Ethereum Classic stayed on proof-of-work when Ethereum moved to proof-of-stake in September 2022. Our proof of stake vs proof of work explainer covers what that means. Because ETC has far less hashrate than Bitcoin, it has been attacked before. In August 2020 it suffered three 51% attacks, in which miners with rented hashpower reorganised thousands of blocks and double-spent coins at exchanges. The network later changed its mining algorithm to Etchash in late 2020 and added further defences, but exchanges kept their caution.
That caution shows up as confirmation requirements. As of October 2026, Coinbase’s public exchange data listed 3,000 network confirmations for ETC deposits, compared with 14 for ETH on Ethereum mainnet. With ETC blocks roughly 13 seconds apart, 3,000 confirmations is on the order of 10–11 hours before funds are credited. Other exchanges set their own thresholds, and many also require hundreds or thousands. What this means in practice:
- Expect deposits of ETC to an exchange to take hours, not minutes. Withdrawals out are much faster.
- Don’t move ETC to an exchange to catch a short-term price move.
- If a deposit seems stuck, check the confirmation count on a block explorer before contacting support.
Supply schedule in brief
Proof-of-work also means new ETC keeps arriving through mining, but on a capped schedule. Under ECIP-1017, adopted in 2017, the block reward drops by 20% every 5 million blocks, roughly every two years at ETC’s block time, which limits total supply to about 210.7 million ETC. That’s a different model from ether, which has no fixed cap and whose issuance depends on staking and fee burning. If you’re comparing the two, don’t assume their supply dynamics match just because the addresses do. Miners who earn ETC also tend to sell some of it to cover electricity, a steady source of selling that staking-based assets don’t have in the same form.
ETC fund products
For exposure through a brokerage account, the main US option is Grayscale Ethereum Classic Trust (ETCG). Its filings for the quarter ended 30 June 2026 still describe the shares as trading on OTCQX, with ETC as the trust’s only asset. Unlike Grayscale’s bitcoin and ether products, ETCG hasn’t converted to an exchange-listed ETF, and we found no conversion filing as of October 2026. Two points to know:
- OTC trust shares can trade at a premium or discount to the value of the ETC they hold, sometimes a large one.
- The trust charges an annual fee, and you can’t redeem shares for ETC.
If you want to own and move ETC yourself, buying the coin directly avoids both issues. The trust suits investors who can only hold securities.
FAQ
Can I send ETC to my Ethereum address?
To your own self-custody address, yes. The same 0x address and seed phrase work on both chains, so you’ll see the ETC once you switch your wallet to the Ethereum Classic network. To an exchange’s ETH deposit address, no. The exchange may not detect it, and recovery is uncertain.
Where can I buy ETC in the US?
As of October 2026, Coinbase (ETC-USD), Kraken (ETC/USD), Robinhood and Binance.US listed ETC for US customers, subject to each platform’s state coverage. For brokerage exposure, Grayscale’s ETCG trust trades over the counter, though its price can differ from the value of the ETC it holds.
Why does my ETC deposit take so long?
Exchanges wait for many confirmations because ETC suffered 51% attacks in 2020. Coinbase’s public data listed 3,000 confirmations for ETC in October 2026, roughly 10–11 hours at ETC’s block time. Check the confirmation count on a block explorer to see how far along your deposit is.
Is there an Ethereum Classic ETF?
Not in the US as of October 2026. Grayscale Ethereum Classic Trust (ETCG) trades over the counter on OTCQX rather than on a national exchange, and it doesn’t allow investors to redeem shares for ETC. Its share price can trade at a premium or discount to its net asset value.
