Toncoin has a new name. After a community vote that closed on 8 June 2026, TON’s native coin became Gram (GRAM) at 12:00 UTC on 15 June 2026. Only the name, ticker and logo changed. The blockchain is still The Open Network, balances carried over 1:1, and nobody had to swap anything. So the answer to how to buy toncoin today is to buy GRAM. Most exchanges now use that ticker, though Coinbase and Kraken still showed TON in October 2026. Below: where to buy it, Telegram Wallet versus Tonkeeper, memo rules and fake “migration” scams.
- The rename passed with about 81% support on TON Vote (1–8 June 2026). No token swap, bridge or claim exists, and 10 TON simply became 10 GRAM.
- Binance, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin, Gate, MEXC, Bitget, HTX, Binance.US, Gemini and Uphold list it as GRAM. Coinbase (TON-USD) and Kraken (TON/USD) still used the TON ticker as of late October 2026.
- Telegram’s in-app Wallet has a custodial side and a self-custodial TON Wallet. The self-custodial part opened to US users in July 2025.
- Exchange deposits on TON almost always need a memo (comment), and the address format (EQ… or UQ…) affects whether a transfer can bounce.
- Any site, bot or DM asking you to “convert”, “migrate” or “claim” GRAM is a scam.
Toncoin is now Gram: what changed and what didn’t
The TON community voted from 1 to 8 June 2026, and about 81.22% backed the change, which took effect on 15 June 2026. The table sorts out the confusion:
| Changed | Did not change |
|---|---|
| Coin name: Toncoin → Gram | The blockchain: still The Open Network (TON) |
| Ticker: TON → GRAM (exchange by exchange) | Your balance: 1 TON = 1 GRAM, no redenomination |
| Logo and branding | Wallet addresses, seed phrases, staking positions |
| How apps display it (“Gram (prev. Toncoin)” during a roughly three-month transition) | The network’s fees, memo rules and smart contracts |
Some exchange notices described the switch as a “1:1 conversion”. That’s internal bookkeeping on their ledgers, not something holders do. Binance, for example, reported completing its rebrand and reopening GRAM deposits and withdrawals on 2 July 2026, a couple of weeks after the protocol date, so short deposit pauses around the change were normal. For the technology and Telegram’s role in it, see our Toncoin explainer. The page keeps the old name because that’s still what most people search.

| Exchange | Ticker shown | Pairs seen | US residents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | TON (“Toncoin”) | TON-USD | Yes |
| Kraken | TON | TON/USD, TON/EUR, TON/USDT, TON/USDC | Yes, most states |
| Gemini | GRAM | GRAM/USD, GRAM/USDC and others | Yes |
| Binance.US | GRAM | GRAM/USDT | Eligible states |
| Uphold | GRAM | Convert | Yes |
| Binance | GRAM | GRAM/USDT, GRAM/USDC, GRAM/TRY (old TON pairs halted) | No |
| OKX, Bybit, KuCoin, Gate, Bitget, MEXC, HTX | GRAM | Mostly USDT, some USDC/EUR | No. HTX is UK-sanctioned (since 26 May 2026) and under an EU transaction ban (since 23 Aug 2026). |
Whether a platform says TON or GRAM, check that the network is The Open Network and that the withdrawal screen offers a memo field. Then compare the things that actually differ: whether the platform serves your state or country, the spread, and your fee tier. How to buy Gram when your app still says TON
The mixed tickers confuse people more than anything else about the rename. If your exchange shows TON, it’s selling the same coin as an exchange showing GRAM. You don’t need to wait for a “GRAM listing”, and there’s no reason to pay a premium on one venue over the other. A few practical consequences:
- Transfers between them work. Withdrawing “TON” from Kraken to a Binance “GRAM” deposit address is a normal transfer on The Open Network, as long as you include Binance’s memo.
- Price sites may list both names. Aggregators moved to Gram, but older charts, alerts and portfolio apps may still track “Toncoin”. Check that you aren’t double-counting one holding as two assets.
- Your records don’t restart. Because no swap took place, your purchase dates and amounts are unchanged. In most tax systems a pure rename isn’t a disposal, but confirm with a tax professional where you live. This isn’t tax advice.
- Watch for a “TON” that isn’t TON. Tokens on other chains using TON or GRAM tickers (bridged versions or outright fakes) aren’t native coins. On any exchange, confirm the network is The Open Network.
Buying inside Telegram Wallet
Many people first meet Gram inside Telegram. The built-in Wallet has two layers:
- The custodial wallet: Telegram’s Wallet service holds the coins, a bit like an exchange account inside the chat app. Card purchases and peer-to-peer buying happen here where offered, and which features you get depends on your country.
- TON Wallet (formerly TON Space): a self-custodial wallet in the same interface, where you hold the recovery phrase. It launched outside the US in 2023 and opened to US users on 22 July 2025, including in-chat transfers and third-party on-ramps.
Convenience is the main appeal: you can buy and send GRAM to a contact in a chat. The trade-offs are custody (on the custodial side you’re trusting the Wallet operator) and phishing (Telegram is where most TON scams start). If you use the self-custodial wallet, write down its recovery phrase offline, exactly as you would for any other wallet.
Tonkeeper and memo rules for deposits
For self-custody outside Telegram, Tonkeeper and MyTonWallet are the long-standing TON wallets. Both show your GRAM balance and support staking and TON apps. Hardware users can pair a Ledger with Tonkeeper. If an older version of your wallet app still labels the balance TON, update it. The coin and the balance are the same either way. For staking options and lockups, see our TON staking guide, and for moving assets between TON and other chains, the guide to bridging to TON.
Two TON-specific rules prevent most lost deposits:
- Memo/comment. Exchanges usually give every customer the same TON deposit address and identify you by a numeric or text memo, which TON wallets call the “comment”. Leave it out when sending GRAM to an exchange and the funds arrive but can’t be credited automatically, which means a support ticket and a wait. Withdrawals to your own wallet don’t need one.
- Bounceable vs non-bounceable addresses. The same TON wallet can be written two ways: bounceable, usually starting
EQ…, and non-bounceable, usuallyUQ…. If you send to a bounceable address whose wallet has never been activated (no outgoing transaction yet), the network bounces the transfer back, minus fees. Wallet apps now show the UQ form for personal wallets for this reason. If a withdrawal returns unexpectedly, this is usually why. Activate the wallet with a small transaction, or use the UQ form.
Rename scams to ignore
Every rebrand brings a wave of fake “upgrade” offers, and the TON ecosystem warned about this one in advance. Patterns seen around GRAM:
| Scam pitch | Reality |
|---|---|
| “Migrate your TON to GRAM before the deadline” | There’s no migration. Balances changed name automatically. |
| “Claim your free GRAM airdrop” via a bot or mini-app | A drainer that asks you to connect and sign a transfer. |
| A Jetton (TON token) named “GRAM” in your wallet | Native GRAM is the chain’s coin, not a Jetton. Treat airdropped lookalikes as spam and don’t interact with them. |
| “Support” DMs offering to fix a missing memo deposit | Real exchanges handle this through their own ticket systems and never ask for a seed phrase. |
If you lose funds, report the account to Telegram and to the exchange involved. US victims can file with the FBI’s IC3 and the FTC. Our crypto scams guide explains the reporting steps and why “recovery services” are usually a second scam.
FAQ
Is Toncoin the same as Gram?
Yes. Toncoin (TON) was renamed Gram (GRAM) on 15 June 2026 after a community vote. It’s the same coin on the same blockchain, The Open Network, with balances carried over 1:1. No swap or claim was needed. Some platforms, including Coinbase and Kraken, still showed the TON ticker in October 2026.
How do I buy Gram in the US?
US options in late October 2026 included Coinbase (listed as TON), Kraken (TON), Gemini (GRAM), Binance.US (GRAM) and Uphold (GRAM), subject to state coverage. Telegram’s self-custodial TON Wallet has been available to US users since July 2025 and supports third-party on-ramps.
Do I need to convert my TON to GRAM?
No. The rename changed only the name, ticker and logo. Your wallet balance is now denominated in GRAM automatically, and exchanges handled the relabelling internally. Any website, bot or message asking you to convert, migrate or claim GRAM is fraudulent and should be ignored.
Do I need a memo to send Gram to an exchange?
Almost always. Most exchanges use a shared TON deposit address and identify your account by a memo, entered in the “comment” field in TON wallets. Copy both the address and the memo exactly. Sending your own wallet a withdrawal doesn’t require a memo.
